NW Indiana ER and Hospital partners with Orthopaedic Surgical Consultants for annual golf outing

NW Indiana ER & Hospital and Orthopaedic Surgical Consultants (OSC) held its annual golf outing at Olympia Fields Country Club on Friday, September 29.

Registration started at 8 a.m. before the golfers started at 9 a.m. The event also provided breakfast at 8 a.m. in the registration area.

OSC and NW Indiana ER & Hospital have been affiliated with the event for the last four years. Jessica Hubbard, director of marketing at NW Indiana ER & Hospital, details what the event is all about.

“We are coming together to celebrate healthcare among physicians and orthopedic representatives,” Hubbard said. “We have two different healthcare industries here that get the chance to have fun with one another and help build for the greater of the patients.”

NW Indiana ER & Hospital, located in Hammond, has a mission to provide Lake County with ongoing access to the highest level of health care. OSC, located in Merrillville, has similar ambitions to provide professional services with customized care for its customers.

“It’s all about the patient care for us,” said Sarah Pomponi, marketing director at Orthopaedic Surgical Consultants. “Between NW Indiana and OSC, that vision has helped create a micro-hospital.”

The golfers were invited for the outing based on their efforts in building relationships and connections that help give the patients the best experience.

Scott Samlan, CEO of NW Indiana ER & Hospital, has regularly attended the annual golf outing. He always looks forward to the relaxing camaraderie.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to get outside of the hospital walls to have a good time with our friends and colleagues,” Samlan said. “We also get the chance to talk about partnerships and talk about strategies over the next few years.”

The first golf outing was held just months after the COVID-19 pandemic. Samlan discussed his gratitude for being able to share these experiences with his colleagues as well as new faces.

“With all of us being physicians and going through the pandemic together, we haven’t had a true opportunity to talk about family, friends or hobbies,” Samlan said. “The past few years of the golf outing have been great at helping build bonds and allow everybody to have a great time.”

The partnership started a few years ago and hasn’t slowed down since. Dr. John Pomponi, president at OSC, originally reached out to the hospital.

“He provides a concierge-level of care,” Samlan said. “When a patient comes in with an orthopedic injury, we make one call to Dr. Pomponi and we know the patients get excellent care.”

At the same time, Dr. Pomponi appreciates the partnership with NW Indiana ER & Hospital. He recognizes the process for managing patients is much more simplified with their help and communication.

“This has been a great partnership,” Pomponi said. “We have a personal relationship with the orthopedic surgeons and emergency room doctors. Patients can get referred easily to our center, so there’s not much red tape in the way of immediate patient care.”
