Wheeler High School Principal Dan Klimczak, a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana, always knew he wanted to make a difference through education. Klimczak’s own grandfather worked his whole career in education, so he saw firsthand his grandfather's impact on students. Years after graduating, Klimczak’s grandfather’s students would stop and talk with his grandfather. This inspired Klimczak to pursue a career in education, but graduating to an administrative position was an unexpected advancement.
Klimczak attended St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana with a major in history and a minor in secondary education. Klimczak worked as a teacher for 13 years, when he had an opportunity to move into administration. He took the opportunity and has spent the last 13 years working first as an assistant principal for Union Township Middle School and then Wheeler High School. Klimczak's impact is his biggest motivator, and he enjoys the variety of each day in his position.
“The most important quality for my position is to be flexible,” said Klimczak. “Every day, something different comes up. I like talking to the students and teachers. That’s what is enjoyable about every day. The list of responsibilities is endless, but it’s just about being flexible and prepared for any possibility.”
In his position as principal, Klimczak thinks the most impactful aspect of his career is seeing the success of the students. He values offering personalized support and helping guide students to graduation.
“The most important part of the work we do is watching the students walk across that stage on graduation day,” said Klimczak. “The students have different abilities, unique interests, and special skill sets. It is a privilege to know that we have all helped provide an avenue to the big day. That is the most rewarding and fulfilling aspect of my job.”
As a resident of Northwest Indiana, Klimczak is a happy participant in the tight-knit community of the Region. Klimczak especially appreciates the local neighborhood he lives in for the friendliness and connectivity residents share. As a principal of a Region school, Klimczak also gets to see the sense of community that neighboring schools share.
“The Region is a wonderful place to live,” said Klimczak. “The people are fantastic, and we have a true sense of community. In the school setting, there are a lot of friendly rivalries. There is a community/familial aspect to it.”
In his free time, Klimczak enjoys relaxing activities with his wife and children. The family spends free days fishing and golfing, and they enjoy spending days at the Indiana Dunes beach. Klimczak deeply appreciates and loves his community, his students, and his role as a community member and a leader of Wheeler High School.
“When my son was beginning down his career path as an educator, I gave him this advice,” said Klimczak. “You have to love what you are doing, and be selfless while doing it. You have to be giving of yourself and your time. No matter how busy you get, make the time to listen to everyone and help them know they are heard and important.”
