The Career Academy Network of Public Schools (CANOPS) is thrilled to announce that its newest high school, The Portage School of Leaders (TPSOL), has been awarded a $2 million Quality Counts grant from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE).
This grant will significantly support the expansion of The Portage School of Leaders’ competency-based education model, which emphasizes building durable skills and fostering community-connected learning. These additional funds will be pivotal in furthering the school’s innovative initiatives, ensuring it remains at the forefront of preparing students for success in the 21st century.
“We are incredibly honored to receive the Quality Counts grant from the Indiana Department of Education,” says Head of School, Dr. Andrew Hoyt, “This grant represents a transformative opportunity for us to further our mission. By strengthening our competency-based approach, we can continue to create a learning environment that challenges students to grow, not just academically, but as critical thinkers, and engaged citizens. This support will help us make deeper learning accessible to all students.”
The Quality Counts grant is specifically designed to facilitate the opening, expansion, or replication of high-quality charter schools to ensure that all students have access to educational opportunities.
As members of the Mastery Transcript Consortium, the Portage School is engaged in national conversations about how to reimagine high school. The school’s innovative approach offers students engaging, experiential learning that embeds high expectations in a context of deeper learning, connection, and student agency.
The grant will also facilitate the sharing of best practices between traditional public schools and charter schools and collaboration with Community Partners.
Supporting Growth at The Portage School of Leaders
At the Portage School of Leaders (TPSOL), a $2 million grant will support the development of experiential learning opportunities for students and professional development for teachers, school leaders, and specialized instructional staff. This investment equips them with the skills and resources needed to support students more effectively. Additionally, the funding will bolster TPSOL's innovative competency based learning model by investing in advanced technology, training equipment, and educational resources.
This funding supports TPSOL in developing new educational materials and innovative approaches to enhance personalized student learning to ensure that every student has access to a high-quality, engaging education.
As part of TPSOL's commitment to student success, the grant will also be used to strengthen “The Club,” the Boys and Girls Club’s Teen Center located on the Portage School campus. This partnership offers additional support, programming, and resources for students, fostering community engagement and providing extracurricular opportunities that complement the school's personalized learning approach. This funding will empower The Portage School of Leaders to build on its mission of providing an engaging, personalized high school experience that equips every student with the durable skills and knowledge they need for success in school and beyond.
