Judy Gehrels, general manager of Uptown Social in Michigan City, brings a wealth of experience and a deep sense of community to her work. From her creative beginnings as a scriptwriter and drama team leader to her current role managing one of Michigan City’s most iconic venues, Gehrels’ journey is one of reinvention, passion, and service.
“Before joining Uptown Social, I’d always been creative – writing scripts, leading drama teams, and organizing productions,” Gehrels said. “After a stroke left me struggling with words, I had to redefine my creative outlets. Helping build a business here reignited my creativity in new ways. I discovered that event planning is its own kind of production, and I fell in love with helping people bring their visions to life.”
Gehrels' personal growth from sales to venue management brought her to realize her deep care for others.
“I used to think I was just a type – a salesperson, good at representing products but not necessarily people,” Gehrels said. “Working here changed that. I realized how much I genuinely care for others. It’s not about selling; it’s about serving and ensuring every detail of their event is perfect so they can enjoy the moment stress-free.”
The history of Uptown Social, built in 1867, is something Gehrels holds close to her heart.
“I can almost hear the stories in this building,” she said. “Built in 1867 as a church, it carries an emotional history that’s palpable. It’s something we love to share with those who walk in. People who are meant to be here feel that connection, and when they book, it’s like we share a mutual love for this space. Our team is deeply committed to the building and the people who visit. They take pride in their work, caring for the space and creating unforgettable experiences. I’ve fallen in love with this building, with event planning, and with rediscovering myself through this work.”
As for her favorite moments at Uptown Social, Gehrels described a recurring but extraordinary experience. For her, wedding days start early, with a focus on creating a calming and joyful environment for the bride.
“On wedding days, I usually take the morning shift. Being a boy mom with two sons and a granddaughter, I’ve had to learn to navigate the world of brides and weddings, and it’s been such a joy,” she said. “In the mornings, I’m there with the brides as they get their hair and makeup done, bringing them treats, mimosas, or whatever they need. It’s a special time to connect with them and set the tone for their big day.”
But for Gehrels, everything builds to one extraordinary moment: the bride’s grand entrance.
“When it’s time for the ceremony, my assistant general manager, Kirsten Bailey, and I are at the ballroom doors. Kirsten opens one side, I open the other, and the music shifts. The doors part, and there’s this audible gasp from the guests as the bride walks in,” she said. “It gives me chills every time. We wait for just the right moment in the music, wipe the bride’s tears, encourage her, and then it’s like, ‘Go, girl, you’ve got this.’ Everything we’ve worked for – the planning, the care, the details – leads up to that moment. It’s like the launching of their future, and it’s so cool. It never gets old.”
Gehrels praised her team’s dedication and willingness to work together as a productive and reliable team.
“Our team is phenomenal. From our bartenders to our part-time staff, everyone is committed to excellence,” she said. “They take pride in this building and care deeply about our guests. We’re like a pit crew: when it’s go time, we’re all in sync.”
Situated in the heart of Michigan City’s Uptown Arts District, Uptown Social plays a key role in the city’s ongoing revitalization. As the area continues to flourish with new businesses, infrastructure improvements, and a vibrant arts scene, the venue has become a cornerstone of this transformation. Through its events and community connections, Uptown Social reflects the creative energy and forward momentum driving Michigan City’s growth.
“This building truly comes alive when people walk through the doors, whether they’re here for dueling pianos, a comedy show, or a celebration,” Gehrels said. “During the pandemic, when people started gathering again in 2021 and 2022, the joy on their faces was incredible. It reignited in me this desire to provide a space where people could escape, laugh, and connect. We work hard to keep everything pristine, from the sound and lights to the overall atmosphere, so every experience feels seamless and special. The Uptown Arts District is such a vibrant place, full of passionate, creative people who see the world in unique ways. Being part of this community, surrounded by that energy, is inspiring.”
Gehrels exemplifies leadership and creativity as the general manager of Uptown Social, seamlessly blending her two decades of experience in event creation, production, and management with her commitment to fostering community and artistic connection. Since joining Uptown Social in 2019, she has demonstrated a true dedication to serving her guests, employees, and local artists. Whether she is overseeing weddings, managing countless events, or building relationships with local creatives, she brings her critical thinking skills, multitasking expertise, and deep passion for her work to every aspect of her role. She hopes her work leaves a lasting impact on the community of Michigan City.
“I want people to remember that Uptown Social is more than a beautiful venue; it’s a place where guests feel truly cared for,” she said. “We take pride in creating a safe, joyful environment where everyone is honored. That’s the legacy I hope to leave: excellence, authenticity, and a genuine commitment to people.”
Her impact is perhaps best reflected in the glowing reviews from her clients. Gehrels takes immense pride in ensuring every event is not only successful but also unforgettable, all while honoring the historic and artistic legacy of the building. As she continues to assist in shaping a new social future for the venue, Gehrels remains dedicated to preserving its rich history and nurturing the creative spirit of the community it has served for generations.
