Celebrate Black History Month at IU Northwest with film screenings, talent show, knowledge bowl, more

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (ODEMA) at Indiana University Northwest is proud to host a series of events to celebrate Black History Month.

All events are free, open to the public and will run through the end of February 2025.

High on the Hog Documentary & Soul Food Tasting
Feb. 5 • 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bergland Auditorium

Come watch the award-winning docu-series High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America A Netflix Documentary and sample some foods from the documentary along with other historically African American dishes.

Light of Truth: Ida B. Wells Documentary & Discussion
Feb. 13 • 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Bergland Auditorium

Watch the winner of the 2024 Chicago Film Festival’s Audience Choice for Best Documentary and have a conversation after with its director, Rana Segal.

NAACP ACT-SO Talent Show
Feb. 15 • 4 p.m.
Savannah Center

The youth of the NAACP Gary ACT-SO program will host their annual Talent Extravaganza Junior Image Awards.

Black Labor Week – Men’s & Women’s Discussions
Feb. 19, 20 • 6 p.m. (both days)
Bergland Auditorium

Discuss issues to improve the working conditions and make visible the experiences of the Black community within the labor movement. We will host a men’s discussion on Feb. 19 and a women’s discussion on Feb. 20.

Steel City Black Knowledge Bowl

The Steel City Black Knowledge Bowl is an academic competition where teams of high school students answer questions based on African American history, life and culture.

Screening of Black Barbie, discussion & lunch
Feb. 27 • 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Library Conference Center 105

Watch and celebrate the momentous impact three Black women at Mattel had on the evolution of the Barbie brand as we know it. There will be a panel discussion and display of the original Black Barbies presented in the movie.
