Notre Dame’s Markus Burton Earns ACC Player of the Week Honors After Scoring Barrage

Notre Dame sophomore guard Markus Burton, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading scorer, secured his first ACC Player of the Week award in the final week of the regular season—an accolade earned in emphatic fashion.

Burton delivered a pair of standout performances in home victories over Stanford and Cal, scoring 24 points against the Cardinal before erupting for 43 in a four-overtime thriller against the Golden Bears. The honor marks the first of his collegiate career.

Over the two-game stretch, Burton averaged 33.5 points while shooting 45.7 percent from the field. He was particularly sharp from beyond the arc, hitting 7-of-13 three-pointers (53.8 percent), and efficient at the free-throw line, converting 18-of-23 attempts (78.3 percent). He also contributed across the board, averaging 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals.

His 43-point explosion against Cal etched his name in Notre Dame’s record books:

  • The most points by an Irish player in an ACC game.
  • The highest single-game total by a Notre Dame player since Adrian Dantley’s 49-point outing against Air Force on Feb. 10, 1975.
  • The most points scored by any ACC player in a game this season.

Burton’s performance was punctuated by a remarkable display of poise in crunch time. He scored 21 of his 43 points in overtime, shooting 6-of-9 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range in the extra frames.

Burton and the Fighting Irish will look to carry that momentum into the postseason when they face Pittsburgh in the opening round of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. ET in Charlotte.
