Notre Dame sophomore guard Markus Burton has earned a spot on the All-ACC Second Team, marking an improvement from last year’s Third Team recognition. Burton, the ACC’s leading scorer and the second-highest scorer in the nation, has now collected All-ACC honors for the second time in his career. However, despite his dominant scoring, this marks the first time since 2017 that the conference’s top scorer was not named to the First Team.
Since returning from injury on Jan. 4, Burton has been on a scoring tear, delivering 20+ points in 15 of his last 18 games. He finished ACC play averaging a conference-best 23.5 points per game, edging out Miami’s Matthew Cleveland (21.3), Duke’s Cooper Flagg (21.2), and Stanford’s Maxime Raynaud (19.3).
Burton elevated his game down the stretch, delivering an elite scoring run to close out the regular season. Over his last four games (since Feb. 26), no player in the country has posted a higher scoring average than Burton, who is putting up 31.5 points per game on 46.9% shooting. During that span, he has gone 11-of-22 from three-point range and 39-of-46 from the free-throw line, while also contributing 4.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
The Mishawaka native has already left his mark in Notre Dame history. He has surpassed Bonzie Colson for the most career 30+ point games in ACC play by an Irish player, recording four such performances as a sophomore.
At the conclusion of ACC play, Burton ranked:
- 1st in scoring (23.5 ppg)
- 7th in three-pointers made (2.2 per game)
- 8th in steals (1.6 spg)
- 10th in free-throw percentage (.855)
- 11th in field goal percentage (.445)
Notable ACC Performances:
- Career-high 43 points in a four-overtime thriller against Cal, setting a new Notre Dame ACC-game record. It was the most points by an Irish player since Adrian Dantley in 1975.
- Fastest Irish player to reach 1,000 career points since 1985, accomplishing the feat in just 54 games.
- Back-to-back standout road games, scoring 30 points at #13 Clemson and 29 at Wake Forest.
- Clutch performance at Boston College, dropping 32 points in a double-overtime victory.
- Game-winning heroics vs. Georgia Tech, scoring 18 of his 26 points in the second half, including back-to-back three-pointers in the final minutes to seal a 71-68 win.
With a team-leading 3.1 assists per game, Burton is on pace to join Irish legend and Ring of Honor inductee David Rivers as just the second player in Notre Dame history to average 20+ points and 3+ assists in a season.
