Last Saturday night, we asked La Porte County residents on our LaPorteCountyLife Facebook page what nonprofit in the area they would give to if they suddenly had a thousand dollars to donate as they wished. By the beginning of this week, the post had been seen by thousands and had accrued over 50 comments from users who were interested in giving a shout out to a good organization in the area.
When threads like this get a lot of attention, we like to shine a light on them and really emphasize the giving spirit that makes our community so great. Plus, it allows us to give a little attention to those working to uplift those in our community.
Sophia Leigh cited the Washington Park Zoo as where her donation would go, “because the donation benefits the community, as well as the animals that they rescue.”
The Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City, besides being a fun and educational place to learn about the animal kingdom, also serves as a rescue for many animals. Some of the zoo’s exotic animals are rescues that were kept illegally as pets, misplaced or injured, and the zoo does their utmost to care for these animals.
“Pax Center - who feed & help the needy of LaPorte,” said Mae Kendra citing the nonprofit that offers a food pantry, community garden and technical resources for people and is located in downtown La Porte.
“The LaPorte Family YMCA!” said Suzanne Schafer enthusiastically of the local Y.
“La Porte County 4-H!” exclaimed Jeremy Smith. The mission of the La Porte County 4-H is to assist youth and adults by conducting hands-on educational programs, and use Purdue University, other land grant universities, and the USDA as a knowledge base.
“La Porte Music Club,” said Connie Lipscomb, mentioning one of the most frequently listed groups in La Porte County in the post.
“Special Olympics LP County,” said Linda Schmitz Nulf Schuck.
“Meals on Wheels!” said Tobi Bednarski about the organization that helps feed many in the area who are in need.
“Keys to Hope,” said Jan Kahn. The group Kahn would give to works as a central access point for social services and resources for the homeless of Michigan City.
“Dunebrook…” said Robin Klute Podell of the Michigan City based organization that helps parents build healthier, happier families and offers intervention assistance for child abuse investigations.
“The Trail Creek Watershed Partnership,” said Nicole Kintzele Messacar. This group is dedicated to the preservation of the Trail Creek Watershed and maintaining its natural beauty for future generations.
Hopefully, all of these groups and more can feel the outpouring of love and support the La Porte County community has for them! Though hypothetical, perhaps this will inspire giving from a few more people and provide a cornucopia of potential recipients for those looking for the right nonprofit to give to!
