Rittenhouse Village of Valparaiso celebrated the 100th birthday of one of its residents with cake, friends, and conversation on Tuesday. Barney, life veteran of 100 years, has independently lived on his own up until just a few years ago when he joined the community at Rittenhouse at 96 years old.
Out of all the birthdays that Barney has celebrated, he holds this most recent one closest as it has been the most memorable spent with friends and family.
“He’s been waiting for this,” said his daughter, June.
Though Barney changed his residence to Rittenhouse in recent years, June talked about what’s kept him young and able up until the move.
“My dad has spent his whole life doing what he’s like and enjoyed. He’s been very active up until the last few years. He played golf until he was 95 years old, making his 6th ever hole-in-one at 92, and ice-fished until he turned 90,” explained June.
Rittenhouse staff asked Barney what his secret was in making it to the 100-year mark, and he simply replied, “Just keep telling me you love me.”
June expressed gratitude for staff at Rittenhouse for watching over and taking care of her father since he’s been with the Rittenhouse community.
“These people are wonderful. They do a wonderful job. They care about these people,” said June.
