#1StudentNWI: Exciting Dances and Events at Hobart High School

Brickie Ambassador Program
A new program for helping underclassmen is beginning at the high school. The faculty members are looking for juniors and seniors who are personable, intelligent, and friendly. This mentoring program is designed to give students the opportunity to make Hobart High School a better place and assist incoming freshmen throughout the school year.

The school hopes for this program to be an important part of the development of underclassmen from children into responsible, respectful young adults. The program’s juniors and seniors will have attributes such as an incredible work ethic, concern for others, enthusiasm, creativity, dedication, and much more.

Not only will this program benefit the underclassmen that it’s designed to help, but the program will be a valuable experience for the mentors. The transition from middle school to high school will become much easier for students now that this program exists, and Hobart could not be more excited for the results!

Project Lead the Way- Grant Given to Combat Public Health Issues
At the High School, the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Innovation senior class has been working on ideas to combat multiple public health issues in our area. One group in particular, including students Megan Kelly, Courtany Hill, Rachael Richardson, and Morgan Barrasas, submitted a grant to the Hobart Education Foundation.

The group’s goal is to bring awareness to the high amount of people with heart disease and obesity in Northwest Indiana. A health fair is going to run in conjunction with a blood drive on January 22 from 4:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M. They are also having healthy food that will be sampled, and meditation is going to be going on to provide a way for people to reduce stress and promote exceptional mental and emotional health.

Also, a Zumba class and other workouts will be taking place. For kids, there will be many activities including a bouncy house obstacle course. There will be no admission fee, and there is no cost for anything taking place in the health fair. This event is going to be very enlightening, but extremely enjoyable as well! Come and help tackle one health issue at a time!

Semi-Formal Dance
The month of January is an exciting time for students at Hobart High School. One thing that is looked forward to is the Winter Semi-Formal Dance! After coming back from winter break, students have had a difficult two weeks preparing for and taking midterms. To sooth frazzled minds, the Semi-Formal dance will be held Friday, January 15th from 7:00 P.M.- 10:00 P.M. The dance is put on by the senior students who are apart of the National Honor Society every year.

This year’s theme is Hobart to Hogwarts ‘Yule Ball’. The National Honor Society students are also incorporating a winter wonderland theme into the Harry Potter theme since not every student is a Harry Potter fan. The turnout is going to be great! A little bit under 300 students have bought their tickets. Caleb Reese, a student at Hobart, will be the DJ for the event. He was also the DJ for this past Homecoming Dance. Also, snacks are going to be provided. Everything from the tickets to the decorations looks absolutely perfect. The night is expected to be fun and “magical”!

Student Spotlight: Courtany Hill
Miss Courtany Hill, a senior here at Hobart, is January’s star student! In everything she has done throughout her four years at Hobart, she has gone above and beyond. On October 15th, seven individuals were recognized for making their communities a better place at the Radisson at the Star Plaza. Three of these awards were Promise of the Future awards which were received by three local high school students. Courtany was awarded one of the three Promise of the Future awards for the One Region of Northwest Indiana, due to her outstanding academic achievements and her dedication to the Hobart community.

She has been involved in a significant amount of activities including starting a tutoring program and giving 125 hours of free tutoring. She has been a mentor for upcoming high school students and has participated in local food drives. Not only has she helped the community by doing all of the above, but she has helped raise money for cleft lift repair/water for Africa!

Asking Courtany what motivates her, she stated, “My motivation to aid my community stems from watching my parents while growing up. I grew up knowing that I am a part of something bigger, and if I want to change the world, I need to be the change I want to see.”

Hobart could not be prouder of Courtany, and we all look forward to seeing what else the future has in store for this amazing student!
