What's Recently Happened

The residents of Lake Station Indiana have spent their first few weeks of summer enjoying the sun and spending time with loved ones. Riverview Park opened its pool for everyone in Lake Station to enjoy a nice day at the pool and snacks.

Throughout the town, many different homes, families, and businesses have hosted rummage and garage sales of all kinds. Many use these summer days as an opportunity to rid themselves of unwanted or unused items.

June 23-24 Riverview Park in Lake Station Indiana hosted an event called Vet Fest. All weekend long, families were free to come enjoy food, quality time, and music. Food trucks and other vendors opened up at 4 PM for families to enjoy food, drinks, and other items that were sold by the vendors. On June 23, starting at 5 PM, three bands were welcomed to the stage to put on a show. The Rusted Strings Band took the stage at Riverview Park at this year's Vet Fest along with Steel Country Band and Small Town Band. Families were free to grab their chairs and blankets and enjoy some good music.

River Forest High School has offered free summer meals. You can also get these meals at five different locations which include Twin Oaks Park, Columbus Park, Ravina Pines Living Community Playground, Henry S Evans Elementary School, and River Forest High School cafeteria. These meals are offered Monday- Friday for breakfast and lunch. Menu and meal times can be found on the River Forest High School website and Facebook page.

Ryan Grellman is an upcoming senior at River Forest High School. He is a part of the marching band and president of the National Honors Society. Throughout Grellman’s summer this far he has done many things such as attending baseball games, fishing, taking courses through ivy tech, and spending time with friends and family. Most exciting of all, Ryan had the privilege of attending this year's trip to Washington DC with other River Forest students and family.

“The DC trip was amazing! It was a surreal experience standing in places where history has been made. I am the type of person that hates reading about history, but being able to see where it happened is a completely different feeling,” says Ryan

When asked what his favorite part of the trip was, Ryan said, “My favorite part of the trip was all of the laughs that we had. The trip was great, but the laughs that were shared amongst the group made the trip a million times better! Whether it was Mr. Jim Witt making jokes, the intensity level from Maxim Neyhart, Lindee Trezak’s “boy hunt”, or the giggles started from Teressa Easton and Amy Trezak, I can never forget those moments.”

Ryan and the rest of the group had the opportunity to go to many places throughout their time in Washington DC. Some of these places include going to the Capitol building, all the monuments possible, a few Smithsonian museums, and the National Army Museum. This trip included plenty of walking and stopping to take pictures to capture the moment.

When asked what advice he would give to future students who are interested in going on this trip Ryan said “Plan to be exhausted! But with all of the exhaustion, you will still come back and say that it was one of your best trips ever.”

Besides the DC trip, Ryan has been busy with working, taking courses through Ivy Tech, taking courses through RF’s summer school program, marching with the band, and spending as much time this summer with his friends and family as possible.
