#1StudentNWI: Only the Coolest Things Happening at Lowell High School

Prom

The end of the school year is always a busy time. Lowell High School Students are focused on finals and the end of sports seasons and clubs. However, May 16th offered juniors and seniors a chance to just relax and have fun on one of the most memorable nights of their high school careers.

This year’s prom featured an Alice in Wonderland theme held at the Halls of St George. Before heading straight to prom, students were invited to attend the Grand March giving parents and friends a chance to take pictures and see the students before prom really started. Dancing and spending that night with friends is surely one they will never forget even long after high school has ended.

Sondra Sheely and Kiefer Kersey took the title of prom king and queen, making the night even more memorable. Junior, Rebecca Karstenson, attended prom for the first time this year and had a great time. “I had a lot of fun, the music was good, and the food was pretty good too!”

Fine Arts Finish Strong

Students in band, choir, and art have spent the whole year improving their skills and their hard work has finally paid off. For students involved in fine arts the spring is a time to show off all they’ve accomplished this years and have fun doing what they love.

Art classes commemorated their achievement with Lowell High School’s annual art show. Student work from ceramics, painting, and other art classes was proudly displayed throughout the school day. Students and staff even had the ability to vote for the pieces they liked the most. The artwork with the most votes earned ribbons boasting first, second, or third place.

Choir put on their annual spring showcase on the 28th this year featuring a Y2K theme. Songs made after 2000 were performed by each choir along with choreographed dances. Each choir came together as one to perform Uptown Funk and Stand Together truly making the concert something special for them. Alumni and students also received the chance to perform solos or duets apart from their regular choirs.

Various students and dedicated seniors were acknowledged at the concert as well. Each choir voted on students they thought deserved to be acknowledged for their attitude, improvement, dedication or leadership. Seniors were also awarded.

Band’s last week has been busier than ever. It started with their annual spring concert, following the middle schools show. The concert provided a chance to showcase the talent and improvement in each band. Lowell’s color guard also took the stage at the concert.

Following their concert Band honored its students at their awards banquet. Dedication and hard work paid off as students were recognized for their accomplishments throughout the year.

Even after they had been awarded, the high school Jazz Band still went on to kick off Memorial Day weekend with the annual Jazzy Drums Café. This jazz band concert allowed students to demonstrate their skills with different kinds of music and instruments than regular concert band. Solos also allowed students to demonstrate their own individual skills.

Academic Teams Celebrate Their Seasons

Ask anyone in spell bowl, academic decathlon, or academic super bowl and they will tell you that they work extremely hard. Students in these activities dedicate time before and after school to learn even more. These hardworking and motivated students were honored on May 21st for all their accomplishments.

Decathlon is a ten subject academic competition including speeches and interviews. Each student competes in all ten subjects based on the year’s theme: environment. Lowell’s academic decathlon placed a proud second at state this year and hope to take first next year.

Spell Bowl started their season towards the beginning of the year doing a great job in each of their competitions. Students participating in Spell Bowl work hard to learn not only on spelling but to also incorporate definitions to help them prepare for SATs.

Academic Super Bowl also worked incredibly hard throughout their season. Each team focused on one individual subject within the context of Rome. Lowell’s social studies, fine arts, and interdisciplinary teams all moved on to state.

Every student in academic teams has worked incredibly hard over their season, often times participating in more than one team. The banquet took the time to recognize some of the most dedicated students in Lowell High School.

Track Sectionals

Girls and Boys track have both had an excellent season. The athletes have shined in all of their events and worked hard every day after school to get better. Last week they held their sectional meet, an event many of the athletes were looking forward too.

Teachers, students, and fellow athletes came to both events to cheer their teams on. Lowell hosted the Girls sectional meet, a few of their team's progressing to state. The boys, also fared well sending a number of their teams to state as well.

Student Spotlight: Hailey Goodwin

Most people around LHS know senior Hailey Goodwin and it is no surprise why. An active participate in Academic Decathlon, Super Bowl, theater, marching band, pep band, jazz band, Premiere Distinction choir, National Honors Society, and Magnum Opus she spends her time with many different groups of people.

Not only does she participate in multiple activities, she holds leadership positions in many of them. Hailey is the section leader for pit percussion, vice president of magnum opus, publicity and set design director for theater, and handles National Honor Societies public relations. When it comes to managing extracurricular activities and a part-time job, she has become extremely good at prioritizing and planning in advance.

“It’s worth it because without all I did, I don’t think I would have been the same without.” Hailey is one of the most motivated students LHS has known.

“It came from my parents,” she said, “but then, throughout high school it became a me thing. I wanted to do it to get myself better and get myself where I wanted to go.” One of her main focuses became IU which she will attend next fall.

More recently, Hailey has been named her class's Salutatorian. Excelling in and outside of school to this extent is quite an accomplishment. “I’m really proud because doing everything with this GPA was really hard, but I wanted to get as much as I possibly could from high school.”

For anyone looking to follow in her footsteps Hailey has a little advice.

“First of all good luck. Second off don’t freak out about a B because if you freak out you’re just going to stress out. Focus on your studies more than getting an A. Focus on standardized tests because those are very important. Lastly, your extracurricular activities are what you’re going to miss most about high school so make sure you spend your time and appreciate them while you’re in them.”
