#1StudentNWI: Powder Puff, Band and Some Great Teachers and Students at Griffith High School

GriffithHSFall1GHS Band Plays with the Big Leagues

On September 12, GHS band went to Purdue to play at half time with the Purdue band and 28 other high schools. It was a long day for the band kids; they had to be at the high school at 3:30 a.m. and got back at around 6 p.m., but it was all worth it.

“I was so proud of everyone and I wouldn't want to spend the day with any other group of people. They make me feel proud to be their drum major. This was my favorite year going there and I had an even better experience. It was an amazing experience to see the Purdue band play and to be able to play with them on their field,” said junior Alyssa Skertich.

This was her third year going to Purdue Band day and her first year as the drum major.

The band only had about two weeks to learn three new songs and did it with success and they got to enjoy the game and watch Purdue win. The band hopes to participate in Purdue Band Day for years to come and some even want to audition for the Purdue band in college.

GriffithHSFall2Homecoming: Powder Puff Game

This year, September 23, was the second year in a row that GHS held a powder puff game during homecoming week for jurors vs. seniors. The game really brings the classes together and gives the students a good opportunity to get to know more people from their graduating class. Griffith had this in the past, but just brought it back last year and the students hope they keep it for many more years.

“The powder puff game was a great chance to not only get together and try to beat the seniors but a chance to bond and get closer as a class,” said junior class council president Dana Jelenski.

The seniors won the game 6-0, but in the end, everyone was together and proud of one another. The junior and senior boys were the coaches and some were cheerleaders. The game was a great way to get the school excited for the rest of homecoming week and get as many people involved as possible.

GriffithHSFall3Student Shout Out

Senior Bethany Brucer has been playing on the varsity volleyball team since her freshman year.

She played in middle school and plays club volleyball in the winter for Diamond Elite. She plays left hitter and plans to play in college. She is the captain of the high school team and always encourages her teammates to do their best. She tries to motivate them to achieve their goals and always brings plenty of spirit to the team.

Teacher Shout Out

Anderson is the choir director for Griffith high school and middle school. Anderson majored in music education K-12 (vocal in general) and has been teaching at Griffith for three years. She has two middle school classes and four high school classes. On top of directing all of her choir kids, she is also the director of the pit orchestra for the high school drama club. There are may field trips and activities that Anderson has planned for the future. On Wednesday, September 30, the choir is having “Coffee Night” at the school where friends and family can come out, enjoy some coffee, and watch some very talented students sing songs of their choice. She also plans on taking some of her choir students to a Blue Man Group concert later in the year.

Last year, Anderson started a music trivia night where the students can sign up and be tested on their musical knowledge. It was a huge success and Anderson plans on bringing that back in the spring.
