#1StudentNWI: Students Take Advantage of MLK Day

mchs-1student-nwi-mlk-dayWhen students get a day off, it is almost like a blessing. Whether we get off for holidays, teacher days, or snow days, a couple things are the same: we get to sleep in, relax, or go to hang out at a friend’s house.

As of two weeks ago, MLK Day was going to be school free in memorial of the reverend, and his ways of peaceful protest.

Then, because of the amount of snow days the high school had, the built in snow days had to be put into effect. So, on January 19, 2015 students rolled out of bed and went to school. While nearly the whole school body would have preferred to have stayed home, there were benefits of going to school.

When students stay at home on holidays or memorial days, we do not get the full effect of what really happened in history that is letting us have a day off. Because of our day in school, students went home with a beneficial learning experience.

While most students spent their day at school, early college students took a trip to the movies and watched the new Martin Luther King Jr. film, “Selma”. Others went to Merrillville, Indiana and listened to a speech by Richard Hatcher, the first African American mayor in the United States.

There is no doubt that a day off would have felt nicer and guaranteed a couple more hours of sleep, but there is also no doubt that a day actually where student actually learned about one of the greatest men in history was more beneficial than chilling on a couch.

Thanks to Martin Luther King Jr. all Americans can be viewed as equals, and thanks to the school’s built-in snow day make-up days, students got to learn about him.
