Community Member Spotlight
Kat Lutze is the co-director of the upcoming winter play “Looking Glass Alice” at Chesterton High School. The play is open to all members of the public and the theater crew hopes the plot will delight them all.
“‘Looking Glass Alice’ is a combination of ‘Through the Looking Glass’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll. It has never been performed before. It watches Alice through her journey of becoming a pawn in the chessboard that is wonderland, to becoming a queen along the way,” Lutze said.
Play rehearsals have just begun, but the cast and crew have already formed bonds and taken their first major steps to bringing a wonderful play to the stage. For the cast and crew, the experience will create new memories.
“My favorite part is the amazing cast and crew that we have. They are already creating fight scenes and chase scenes and things with puppetry,” Lutze said. “There are some elements within this play that are larger than life and I don’t want to give anything away.”

The Chesterton High School Band is hosting a fun program called the “Big Band Bash” at 7 p.m., Feb. 1 and 2 in the CHS cafeteria.
The event is primarily a fundraiser for the jazz band for later in the semester for when they perform ‘All That Jazz’ - a performance in which the band brings in guest artists to do clinics and master classes.
“It is for the students to be better jazz musicians and musicians overall,” band director Adam Bess said.
The event is a popular community event, bringing in artists, family, and eager listeners.
“We also just truly love to be entertaining for the public. We are inviting people from outside the school to come in and play for us. We are putting an exciting program together with things people want to dance to, things people want to listen to to provide some entertainment to the community,” Bess said.
“This is my first time doing it and I have to imagine that my favorite part will be the performance and getting to hear all my students perform and all the individual sounds combine,” Bess said.

Junior Olivia Johnson is leaping into her 2019 cheer season full of spirit and high expectations for herself and her team.
“I am competing on Rage at Cheer Extreme Chicago,” Johnson said. “I am feeling pretty good about the season so far seeing as we have placed first at our early competitions.”
Johnson is aiming to be on a level 5 team and participate at the esteemed competition of Worlds.
“Another goal for me is to be able to fly in cheer. The stunts are going to be very hard to learn and I will need to get more experience and practice for that to be able to happen, but I’m willing to work for it,” Johnson said.
Johnson is looking forward to finishing her junior year strong both on and off the mats.
“I’m really hoping to make this season memorable with my teammates and spend more time with my team. We are a family,” Johnson said.
What has happened?
The Chesterton High School choir and orchestra Holiday Concert was held on December 14, hosted by Director of Choirs Kristen Morris, and Orchestra Instructor Brian Grenier.
“We had been practicing the songs a lot and most of them are well known Christmas songs, so they don’t take as long to learn,” said senior Sarah Kaiser.
Performing is something students in choir and orchestra love and look forward to doing, both for the adrenaline rush of standing under the hot stage lights, and the anticipation of applause.
“It’s about being able to prove you have worth and that you matter,” sophomore Maggie Lesher said. “Performing is like being in a sport. You don’t have to be the best at it, but you have to be the best for your team.”
The Holiday Concert was the perfect way to kick off winter break and left choir and orchestra students eager to compete in future events.
