An Art for All

High school can be a difficult time for all. Teenagers are trying to figure out who they are and find their niche. With all the cliques and stress it can be difficult to find a safe, positive environment. But La Porte High School has a unique new club that provides just that. Finding Yourself in School Club (F.Y.I) was started this year by senior Erin Clark with the help of club sponsor, Angela Saoud.

Clark’s inspiration for the club was simple, “I wanted to create a club where members can try new and exciting things without any fear.”

Such an activity took place Wednesday, January 30th, when members were asked to showcase a piece of original artwork, a favorite piece of artwork, or create their own during the meeting. The goal of this meeting was to appreciate others’ talents and become culturally aware. Members were stunned and appreciative of the artwork their peers showed. Sierra Mullican showcased multiple original sketches and paintings, which included elephants, flowers, and fictional characters.

Mullican explains, “I started coloring when I was little and I have not stopped since. My pieces usually will take an hour, and I love to draw elephants.”

Members were also asked to comment on the artwork and pose questions to the artist. Through the questions, the artists revealed their sources of inspiration which ranged from dreams to past experiences.

Member Bryson Maesch commented, “After today, I realize people can draw inspiration from anywhere for art. Whether it be dreams or nature, inspiration is everywhere.”

A variety of work was admired including sketches of dragons, elephants, anime, seasons, super heroes, people, and even photography. This variety is a key component of the F.Y.I club.

Saoud explains, “The club has a goal to bring together students who have varied interests and talents in a safe space where everyone can try new things. We are always striving to be positive and supportive.”

Besides the recent art show, other activities this year have included window painting at Howmet, side-walk chalking, glow bowling, and a recent trip to experience unique cuisine at India House. Anyone is welcome to join the club and it will continue to explore new talents at horizons as the year continues.
