Assistant Police Chief Retiring After 30 Years of Service

Valpo-Police-Assistant-Police-Chief-Retiring-After-30-Years-of-ServiceAssistant Chief of Police Rich Spicer has announced his retirement after 30 years of service with the Valparaiso Police Department. Rich has held the position of Assistant Chief of Police for 14 years and was appointed to the position by Mayor Costas. He has held multiple positions within the department which included: Patrol Sergeant, Detective Lieutenant, Training Officer/Coordinator, Member of the Porter County Narcotic Unit, School Resource Officer, Member of the Porter County Safe Schools Committee and Gang Resistant Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Instructor.

The department and officers have experienced numerous accomplishments since Rich has been a key member of the Administration Team. The department earned it’s first accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies in 2010 and has been re-accredited twice since their first award. Rich was a big part of the department’s move into a new, state of the art building, in 2007. Officers have had access to the most current law enforcement technology and equipment during this time. The department and it’s officers have earned.

“I have seen many changes in the last 14 years and I am proud to have been a part of those changes”, explained Rich. I truly appreciate the opportunity to be part of this Administration Team”.

Assistant Chief Spicer has accepted a new position with the Valparaiso Community School Corporation as Assistant Director of Transportation and Safety/Training. “This new position is a great opportunity for me to continue to serve our community through a great school system”, Rich explained.

Spicer will begin his new position on August 21st with the schools. Good luck Assistant Chief Spicer and thanks for your service!
