Residents at Aviva Valparaiso were treated to its annual car show event during a beautiful morning on Wednesday, August 14. The Winamac Old Auto Club brought some of its best classic cars in for residents and their families to admire.
Susan Burelli, sales and marketing specialist at Aviva Valparaiso, has been looking forward to this event for the past several weeks. This year’s car show came with a special theme as well.
“We decided to do a family luau for our residents and their families,” Burelli said. “The car show is always an entertaining event. The Winamac Old Auto Club comes every year, and I think our residents enjoy having them.”
One of the coolest parts about this event for residents is that they get a chance to see cars that give off a strong, nostalgic feeling.
“The residents here basically grew up with these cars,” Burelli said. “A lot of them have owned historic cars similar to the ones here today so I think that it's fun for everybody.”
According to Burelli, each car needs to be at least 25 years old in order to participate in the car show. She credits those who provide the necessary maintenance to keep these cars in good condition, some for more than half a century.
After checking out the cars, everyone was treated to a Hawaiian lunch. Under the lunch tent, Aviva Valparaiso was also running a bake sale to help benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
“It’s important for us to always help senior citizens however we can,” Burelli said. “Donating to the Alzheimer’s Association is one way that we’re able to do that. There’s an annual walk every year in the fall and it’s great to always be involved with it. We also help out through our assisted living and memory care options here at Aviva Valparaiso.”
There was also a lot of work to push this event out to the community. Kathryn Koenig, lifestyles enrichment director for Aviva Valparaiso, shares how their team worked diligently to spread the word about the car show.
“It’s all about the residents at every event we do,” Koenig said. “We posted about it online on our Facebook page and website. We sent flyers out to families. We even posted about it in a few community areas that allowed us to do so. We reach so many people and it’s always a great turnout for the car shows.”
While all the residents have fun with this annual tradition, it always puts a smile on the face of the Aviva Valparaiso team to see them get a glimpse of their past through these classic cars.
“I love seeing all these cars that have been a part of the families forever,” Koenig said. “These are original cars too which is pretty cool. It’s a great event and we’re glad to invite them to a free lunch as well.”
Aviva Valparaiso is grateful for working with the Winamac Old Auto Club on this annual event. The oldest car club in Northwest Indiana will be in Hobart on Thursday, August 15 and Valparaiso on Sunday, August 18. You can check out the full event schedule on its website.
