BFMS Basketball Recap: vs. Chesterton

The 7th grade “A” team played a very aggressive team from Chesterton last night and lost 41-22. Charles Nagy led the way with 8 points and 6 rebounds and hustled all over the court. Mike Girman came off the bench and played well on defense and added 7 points and 8 rebounds. Drew couldn’t find his shot but contributed with a solid effort on defense and 4 points.

Max scored 3 and hustled on the court. The boys will easily forget about this game and look forward to this weekend as they host their annual tournament. Action starts at 9 am, please come and support your Vikes! Facing Chesterton is always a daunting task, especially in enemy territory, but the 8th grade Vikes strapped on their warrior garb and stared down the Trojans on enemy hardwood.

In the “A” game, the Vikes lulled Chesterton into false hope, allowing the Trojans to build a secure 17-point lead at half-time. But in the second half, the Vikes surprised Cheesetown with its own version of the Trojan horse as the Green Machine manned-up on defense and suddenly found the basket with a 13 to 0 run to gain the momentum and forge on to a 48 to 45 victory.

Leading BF in scoring, Alex Healy tickled the twines for 13 points, followed by Bret Boetel’s 10 and Justin Osburn’s 9. Keeping the Green Machine chugging along, Trent Fortson fired off 5 assists to go with his 5 rebounds, while Brendan Sutherland threw out 3 assists.

In the “B” game, the second team was determined not to let Chesterton stay close and toppled the Trojans 37 to 19. Leading the scorers, Serph Decker tallied 10 points, followed by Neil Whitfield’s 6, while Jacob Bekelya, Jake Catarello, and Kevin Hickey each fired in 5. Serph also led the team in steals with 4, while Andrew Mears snuck under the glass to lead the team in rebounds.

The “B” team is taking a week off from games while the “A” team prepares to host a tournament this weekend. The BF Boys 7th Grade Basketball B Team won again Tuesday night 43-34 against Chesterton. The B Team is now 6-1 for the season. Defensive pressure once again was the deciding factor in the game. The team combined for 20 steals. Leading the way was Jake Pancek with 4, Eric Yiankes & Daniel Gholston with 3 each and the remaining 6 players had at least one. Offensively, the team again proved to be balanced with all 9 players scoring. Jake Pancek scored 9, Kyle Kaminski 8 and Colin Ahearn added 6. All 9 players also contributed on the boards grabbing at least 1 rebound each. Daniel Gholston pulled down a team leading 4 and Andrew Lehnen grabbed 3.

I continue to be impressed with the fact that all the players are contributing in all aspects of the game. Their tenacious defense and effort makes this team exciting to watch and enjoyable to coach.

Next up on the schedule is River Forest next Tuesday at their place.
