Bicycle Safety Day Teaches Kids Rules of the Road

Portage-Bicycle-Rodeo-2012-1The Portage Fire Department with help from IAFF Local 3151, Portage Kiwanis, and Porter, had a Bicycle Safety Day Saturday May 19, 2012. The mission was to get as many children to wear bicycle helmets as we could. We gave out instructions on following the rules of the road, which included stop signs, yield signs, and railroad track maneuvering.

A total of 42 helmets were fitted by Portage Kiwanis members.

The Portage Police registered many bicycles, and used a radar gun to show many of the children their speed on the course.

If you are in need of a helmet for your child contact Asst. Chief Dan Kodicek at 219-762-7404; this will be while supplies and sizes last. Thanks to all who helped and attended.
