Brickie Volleyball Season is Underway

The Brickie Girls' volleyball season has begun and it looks like a promising start for the ladies. Under new leadership from Varsity coach Justine Verbich and assistant Varsity coach Stephanie Postma, the girls have been working hard. The Junior Varsity team is now being led by Coach Elizabeth Denton who brings solid knowledge of the game to these young players.

This week the girls fought two tough battles against rivals Portage and Wheeler. Although the Varsity team fell in four against both teams; they left a presence on the court. The leader in hitting was senior Caylie Pruitt with 35 kills. Sophomore Jessica Parlock also dominated at the net with 15 kills. Junior setter Lori Vasquez led the Brickies with 29 assists and senior setter Geena Lammertin had 22 assists. Senior defensive specialist Madison Elliot had 18 digs. The scores of the Portage game were 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 19-25; and the scores of the Wheeler game were 22-25, 25-27, 25-21, 21-25.

The JV team lost in two sets against Portage with the scores being 7-25 and 15-25. The girls came back alive on Wednesday to defeat Wheeler in three; the scores were 25-17, 14-25, and 16-14. The leaders of the Junior Varsity team this year are libero Natalie Giangiuio, outside hitter Katie Dumbauld, and setter Alexis Bunch.

Overall, the Brickies had a promising start to the season. As the season progresses the girls look to solidify their team chemistry and clean up a few of the forced errors they had in the beginning. They have big goals set out for themselves this season and they are determined to achieve them.

This week on Monday they will play their first home match against River Forest at Home. Tuesday they will play at Valpo and Thursday their second home game against Highland. JV games start at 5 with Varsity to follow.
