Bucher Technologies (BucherTech) continues to grow, adding more talented members to its team of IT professionals. One of the most recent additions is Technician Alex Gurekovich, who started in June – fresh out of college, having just graduated from Purdue University.
Gurekovich’s forte, and degree, is in cybersecurity. It is a career path he settled on in high school, though not out of a special passion for the industry, not at the time, at least. It started out as something practical. IT was booming and brought an influx of jobs along with it.
“My career counselor in high school sat us down in the computer lab and we used this website where you can look at different careers and their outlooks," he said. “I saw the growth in cybersecurity and locked on. I never wanted to be out of a job. It helped that I grew up around technology. I always had tablets, iPads, or whatever else was around me to learn on. Even back in grade school we kind of evolved from pencil and paper to smart boards and Chromebooks.”
He started studying and got to work on building his qualifications, which included an internship at a bank. He helped out with IT audits, which left him behind a desk reviewing information rather than getting hands-on and solving problems himself. He did well and landed a job offer from the bank, but the work did not satisfy his growing interest in the more practical aspects of cybersecurity.
He shifted his focus and started looking for jobs in the area, one that he could have in place before he graduated from Purdue. That led him to his first connection with BucherTech in 2023. Ben Bucher, operations manager at the company, liked his resume, but the company did not have room for anyone new at the time. So, Gurekovich’s search continued.
“I kept looking, but wasn’t really successful,” he said. “Then, come February, Ben reached back out to me. He said they were looking to expand and hire. Over the next couple of months, up until my graduation, I worked with him, met with the team, and did some interviews. Graduation day came and it was a little bittersweet because I didn’t have a formal offer and didn’t know what the future had in store.”
Then, halfway through his graduation day, BucherTech sent over a job offer. Gurekovich now knew that he would be launching his career at one of Northwest Indiana’s IT and managed service providers (MSP).
“From there it’s been an incredible journey and learning experience,” he said. “BucherTech, as an MSP, sort of does everything. I get all of the hands-on work that I’ve ever wanted, so it all worked out.”
As a technician, Gurekovich does a little bit of everything. Some of it is very routine, as easy as updating computer programs or swapping in some new hardware for a client. Other cases are more extreme – such as protecting or recovering a client’s data after it has been targeted by a hacker.
“You hear the cliché ‘no two days are the same,’ a lot, but it’s very true here,” Gurekovich said. “One day I could be doing a computer install for a client that had a laptop or desktop go bad or get too old, and the next I could be cleaning up a ransomware attack. It keeps you on your toes, and it’s always new and exciting.”
BucherTech’s team includes a number of veterans, who often specialize in different aspects of IT. One of Gurekovich’s co-workers might be an expert on the latest antivirus solutions, while another might be more informed about the ins and outs of cloud systems. He is thrilled to have found a collaborative environment where he can grow his career.
“I get to pick people’s brains about different IT areas that they’re fluent in,” he said. “We’ve got a bunch of senior guys here who are good at all kinds of categories. If one person doesn’t have an answer, they can point you to someone who does. It’s a great team environment that’s efficient and effective. I couldn’t be happier with it.”
