The Town of Burns Harbor just became even greener. Porter County Recycling and Waste Management presented the Redevelopment Commission with two rain barrels as part of the Community Rain Barrel Demonstration Grant May 10.
The barrels will be installed in a community garden on-site at the Town’s Food Truck Square. Formerly the site of the historic Westport Community Club — located at the intersection of Haglund Road and S.R. 149, the Food Truck Square hosts festive community and food events throughout warm weather months.
The barrels will help conserve gallons of water to be used for the garden. Additionally, proper storm water management reduces water run-off into nearby rivers and lake.
“Congratulations to Burns Harbor,” Porter County Recycling and Waste Management’s Therese Haller said. “These rain barrels help the Town become active stewards of local watershed water quality.”
Burns Harbor officials hope to integrate other green infrastructure at the Food Truck Square as part of an overall master development initiative. The four-acre site is expected to eventually transition into a future pedestrian-friendly town center and public access point to the Marquette Greenway Trail.
