Chesterton High School student, Rachel Fredenburg, is winner of the Indiana Bookmark Contest sponsored by the Geography Educators Network of Indiana (GENI). Fredenburg is a freshman in Cathy Dean’s Geography/History of the World class.
Every year National Geographic hosts a Geography Awareness Week in November. This year’s theme, "The Future of Food,” prompted GENI to sponsor a contest in Indiana to raise awareness about the challenges of feeding the people of the world and what nations can do to work together to meet these needs.
Teachers throughout the United States were encouraged to talk with their classes about these challenges. Fredenburg along with seven other students in Dean's geography classes submitted bookmarks earlier this year to the contest. Fredenburg’s bookmark was recently chosen as the winner of the Indiana contest.
As a winner, she received a $50 check from the Indiana Geography Educator's Network as well as a book entitled, Food for Thought: Indiana's Harvest. Her bookmark design will also be printed and distributed to schools and libraries around the state of Indiana to raise awareness of geography, and in particular, the challenge of feeding the world.
Fredenburg is the daughter of Matt and Melissa Fredenburg of Chesterton.
