Hammond residents braved the chilly weather on the morning of Saturday, December 7 to participate in the City of Hammond’s annual Santa Sprint Fun Run and Holiday Parade.
The day’s festivities kicked off with the Santa Sprint Fun Run. Over 30 participants, adults and children alike, gathered at the corner of 175th Street and Indianapolis Boulevard. At the given signal, they dashed off, hoping to be the first to cross the finish line at the Hammond Sportsplex, about a mile ahead. The spectators cheered and shouted encouragement as the sprinters reached the finish line.
Upon the Santa Sprint’s completion, spectators of all ages lined up along Indianapolis Boulevard to prepare for the parade. The parade members threw candy for the spectators' enjoyment. Many businesses and organizations from throughout Hammond and the Region participated in the parade, including Purdue University Northwest, the Northwest Indiana Jeepers, the Hammond Fire and Police departments, Culver’s, Schoop’s, and the St. John Bosco Spartans cheerleaders.
The Highland Indiana Region Model “A” Restorers Club, Snap, Home Depot, and even the Kona Ice truck joined in the fun too. Of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance as well, happily waving to the assembled crowd from their lofty float. Mayor of Hammond Thomas M. McDermott Jr. joined the parade to greet spectators and enthusiastically pass out candy. There were plenty of costumes to be seen, including the Grinch, gingerbread men, elves, and even a Care Bear.
Despite the chilliness in the air, the atmosphere was warm with goodwill and plenty of holiday cheer.
