crown-point-libraryAward Winning Author Visit - Ben H. Winters
Award Winning Author Ben H. Winters will visit the library on August 21 at 6 p.m. He will be discussing his third book World of Trouble from his Last Policeman Trilogy and mystery writing. Books will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow his presentation. The event is free and registration is not required.

Ben H. Winters is the author of seven novels, including most recently Countdown City (Quirk), an NPR Best Book of 2013 and the winner of the Philip K. Dick Award. Countdown City is the sequel to The Last Policeman, which was the recipient of a 2013 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America; it was also named one of the Best Books of 2012 by Amazon.com and Slate. World of Trouble, the third in the Last Policeman Trilogy, comes out in July of 2014.

The Last Policeman Trilogy is now available in print and in eBook format at the Crown Point Library.

Library director retires after 26 years of service
After more than 26 years of service at the Crown Point Community Library, Director Lynn Frank will retire on August 29. Lynn started at the library as a part-time reference assistant in 1988, later becoming Head of Reference Services in 1996. After completing her Masters in Library Science degree from Dominican University, Lynn took the reins of the library in 2000. It was under her leadership that the fantastic new library was built and opened in October, 2012. A search for a new director is underway by Bradbury & Associates. Sarah Long has been hired as an interim director until the new director is found.

Swinging and Singing: The Magic of Music in World War II
Swinging and Singing: The Magic of Music in World War II is a trilogy presented by Dr. John Ban. The first presentation: “Dancing with the Stars on the Nostalgic Stage of WWII” will be presented on Thursday, September 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Crown Point Library. This 90 minute musical program is comprised of film clips, music, and historical narration about dancing in America from 1934 to 1948. It will spotlight some of the great dancers of the War era. Come watch the brilliant footwork of Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, the Nicolas Brothers, Eleanor Powell, Ginger Rogers, Ann Miller and other “hoofers.” Their dance routines rocked Vaudeville, Hollywood musicals, dance halls, variety shows and canteens of America. Bring your dancing shoes with you, and tap your way back to those spectacular times. This program is free; registration is not required.

Mark your calendars for the other two presentations in the series: “The Magic of Music in the World War II Era: Premier Vocalists and War Music” on October 9, 2014 at 1:00 pm., and “Music of the World War II Era: The Big Bands” on November 13, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.
