Donation from Munster plastic surgeon’s office helps women receive timely care

Board certified plastic surgeon David Robinson, MD, and his practice, Indiana Plastic Surgery, donated $2,500 to Women’s Diagnostic Centers of Community Healthcare System, in support of the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund. The contribution will help local women who do not have insurance and cannot afford diagnostic breast care.

Dr. Robinson and his staff raised the funds at Indiana Plastic Surgery during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Dr. Robinson’s mother, Virginia Robinson, died in 2015 of other causes after surviving a 28-year battle with breast cancer. She was deeply involved with programs and services at Community Hospital as the wife of Edward P. Robinson, hospital administrator from 1967 to 2003. Virginia Robinson also served as guest of honor at the inaugural Lights of Life tree lighting ceremony. Proceeds from that program support the non-profit Community Cancer Research Foundation, which brings advances in cancer research to local residents.

Breast cancer can be diagnosed through routine mammography. The Women’s Diagnostic Centers of Community Healthcare System offer 3D mammography with same-day appointments and same-day results in most cases. With advances such as same-day results, ABUS (automated breast ultrasound system), Fast Breast MRI and coordination between area physicians, women can generally begin treatment for breast cancer at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System within 10 days of being diagnosed. The centers have earned national accreditations for breast imaging, mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound guided breast biopsy.

“We are so grateful for this donation,” said Mary Nicholson, MD, medical director of Community Hospital Women’s Diagnostic Center in Munster and regional director of Breast Imaging Services for Community Healthcare System. “Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Robinson and his practice, this funding will allow us to provide excellent care to many more patients.”
