East Chicago farmers market offers fresh, locally grown produce

The Community Healthcare System farmers market returns this summer to the grounds of St. Catherine Hospital, as part of the Lake County Eats Local! program.

Shop for fresh, locally grown produce and food products by Northwest Indiana farm-to-table vendors, and take advantage of free nutritional health information and wellness screening opportunities. The farmers market is open from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 2, 16 and 30 outside the north entrance of the hospital, 4320 Fir St.

“Making fresh, healthy food available to the community is crucial to public health,” said Leo Correa, CEO of St. Catherine Hospital. “Part of the goal of the farmers market is to provide residents with opportunities to get nutritious, high-quality, affordable foods along with a good dose of health information.”

On Aug. 16, the Stroke and Diabetes Awareness Fair will begin at 8 a.m., with free screenings, vendor booths and presentations, and the farmers market will begin at its usual 11 a.m. time. Attendees at the Aug. 30 market will learn about cool weather gardening and how to extend the growing season, with a look at which plants thrive in cooler months.
