Empty Bowls Fundraiser at VHS

Tuesday night at Valparaiso High School, the halls were filled with the enticing aroma of soup. empty-bowls1The first Empty Bowls Fundraiser was held in the cafeteria. This fundraiser was designed to raise money for Hilltop Neighborhood House. All proceeds from the event benefitted Hilltop.

Students in Ceramics II, under the direction of Ms. Bloese, planned and worked on the fundraiser for the past semester. Each student in that class, 13 total, made about 10 bowls for the event. Students in the Ceramics I class also made bowls and turned out around 60 bowls. Representatives from various clubs and organizations (Key Club, Spanish Club, etc) were also invited to create bowls, as well as various teachers.

The bowls were displayed on tables at the fundraiser, in all shapes and colors. For the price of a ticket, people were able to pick out a bowl of their choice and enjoy soup from various restaurants. Soup providers, close to 40 gallons of soup, were Jimmy’s Café, Valpo Velvet, Blackbird Café, Bistro 157, Around the Clock, Don Quixote, and the VHS advanced cooking class. Starbucks provided coffee and tea. Diners were treated to live music provided by a VHS small orchestra ensemble and Stop. Drop.Rewind., a local college band.
