Family Promise Week

Family Promise Week

Beginning October 24, Family Promise of Porter County will participate in Family Promise Week, a national event to raise awareness of the issue of family homelessness and the challenges low-income families face during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nonprofit is one of 200 Family Promise Affiliates nationwide.

“For the last few years, Family of Promise of Porter County has been preparing to help families with children become

independent and self-sustaining. Our team was ready to take on housing families the beginning of 2020. Unfortunately,

Covid 19 changed our thought process on housing, but it did not deter us from our goal. We supplied hygiene kits to

various agencies in Porter County for the homeless and used the Prevention and Diversion model to keep families in their

houses or help them find alternative housing with the resources that were already in place.” Robin Wilkening, Board

President

Volunteers have been working tirelessly during COVID-19 to still reach the goal of providing shelter and services to

families dealing with homelessness. Family Promise of Porter County is excited to announce that they will be hosting

their first family in the month of October! It has been a long journey, but the needs are too great to quit.

Each year in America, 2.5 million children experience homelessness. One in sixteen American children will experience homelessness before they reach the first grade. These children are three times more likely to be placed in special education programs, eight to nine times more likely to repeat a grade, and seven times more likely than their peers to commit suicide. The COVID-19 crisis has increased economic instability, creating an even greater risk of homelessness for American families.

Those who wish to support these efforts can donate to Family Promise of Porter County at FPGives.org or follow Family Promise of Porter County on Facebook where there will be information posted all week to help raise awareness.
