Feng Shui Anyone?

Feng Shui or the ancient Chinese art of arranging furniture in your home a certain way to increase chi or life energy flowing into your home is a very interesting concept. There are some mystical elements to it that I honestly can't tell you if I believe or not. However, I do believe there is definitely a correlation between a person and their living/working environment.

I have worked at many different locations over the years both in Valparaiso and Lafayette, and have seen a variety of office organization patterns. Some desks have been kept spotless clean with everything filed away in an exact place, while others have stacks on their desk. I believe it depends on what works for the person however. I have seen bosses with unfathomable amounts of notes and papers on their desk, but with the ability to find any sheet of notes or a file within seconds of me asking for it.

This comes up in my mind recently because I spent a good deal of Saturday cleaning my bedroom. To be blunt, it was a mess. Moving home from Lafayette, I still hadn't quite unpacked and gotten everything settled into their own spots. So, Saturday I woke up and decided it was time to reclaim my room. This involved organizing my bookshelf, gathering and storing my teacher supplies in a single accessible bag,  hanging up and storing clothes, and more. The difference was immediate. I felt a boost to my mood as well as my energy when my room became cleaner. I once again have floor space and don't have to tip toe over boxes. As I walk through my room, my shins start to tingle trying to warn me that I am about to run into a box. No no! I say, those boxes are gone!

The only other rule of Feng Shui that I somewhat unconsciously follow is that the foot of your bed is not to point to a doorway. Thinking back on all the different furniture arrangements I had growing up, I can't recall any that had the foot of my bed facing my door. A few weeks ago, when I was on vacation with my sister, before I went to bed I notices the bed was diagonal in a corner facing the door. I didn't even think of this Feng Shui rule that I did know, but just thought the bed looked uncomfortable in this manner, and moved it against the wall instead. Couple days later I was discussing Feng Shui with my sister and mentioned this cardinal rule. She replied with a "Oh, so that's why you moved the bed in the guest bedroom." I sat there thinking about it. I hadn't even realized that I had moved the bed away from the door in that manner. The explanation for this rule is that doorways are suppose to be portals of some type between two rooms. They are considered very high energy zones and to sleep with your feet towards it somehow drains you of your energy as you sleep. Once again, an interesting concept, a lot of mysticism, but for some reason, I seem to follow this rule.

Anyways, if your house or workplace is becoming a little or allot cluttered, try taking the time to clean it up, go through old stuff, see what  you can donate to Goodwill, and see if it makes a difference. It did for me.
