Four High School Seniors Receive La Porte Service League Scholarships in 2016

Service-League-Scholarship-Winners-2016Four La Porte High School seniors recently were honored by La Porte Service League with special scholarships to pursue college educations in the arts.

At its June meeting, League members recognized the following students who demonstrate a commitment to service in their community, much like the honored members of Service League for which each scholarship is named:

Alyson Love – recipient of the Diane Bamberth & Kitty Wolf Scholarships
Hannah Jongkind – Jack Whitted Scholarship
Jordan Behenna – La Porte Service League Scholarship
Maddy Watterson - Frances M. Rumely Award of Excellence

Diane Bamberth was a member of La Porte Service League for many years. Her numerous hours of volunteer work in the community, the spirit with which she shared herself and her inspiration to those who worked with her resulted in the naming of this scholarship in honor of her passing. The winner of this award emulates Diane’s wonderful spirit of volunteering in our community and plans to major in a fine arts field in college.

Kitty Wolf has been an active member in the La Porte Service League since 1957. She is an accomplished artist, has performed in countless Service League plays and co-founded the “PoPEYE’s Poppin’ in the Park” Summer Concert series at Fox Park with her late husband, Bill. The winner of this award has much experience in fine arts to-date and plans to continue pursuing this goal in college.

Former member and La Porte First Lady Frances M. Rumely is memorialized through the student exemplifying qualities of intellectual ability, leadership and distinguished service to school and community. The award is given annually to a La Porte High School senior female who is in the top 10% of her class academically.

In addition, Jack Whitted was a strong creative force behind the innovative Service League play sets for many years, as his wife Georgia was a long-time active member and actress on-stage. This award commemorates his invaluable volunteer support.
