Gary Community School Corporation Celebrates West Side Leadership Academy Girls Track Team’s Outstanding Achievements at Hoosier State Relays

The Gary Community School Corporation is celebrating an incredible performance by the West Side Leadership Academy Lady Cougars track team, who made an unforgettable strides at the Hoosier State Relays this past weekend. Representing the region with Cougar pride, the team qualified in three events while showcasing synergized talent in the state spotlight.

The Lady Cougars competed in the Shot Put, the 4x200 Relay (Kaylah Williams, Kiera Cason, Priscilla Burton, Kanileah Maxey), and the 4x400 Relay (Kaylah Williams, Kiera Cason, Priscilla Burton, Michaela Byrd). While every performance reflected their dedication and skill, the 4x400 relay team truly stole the spotlight with an inspiring leap in the rankings. Entering the meet ranked 18th, the Lady Cougars finished 3rd in the state.

"This unexpected rise in the ranks is a testament to the hard work, determination, and resilience of the Lady Cougars," said Athletics Coordinator Jarae Protho-Guider. "Their commitment to excellence has not only brought pride to West Side Leadership Academy but to the entire Gary community."

“We couldn’t be more proud of these young women,” said Hank Kilander, Athletic Director for the Gary Community School Corporation. “Their passion, discipline, and unwavering teamwork have propelled them to greatness, and they’ve established themselves as one of the top teams in Indiana.”

The winning team will sport their medals as they are recognized at the next school board meeting on April 10. The Gary Community School Corporation encourages the entire community to rally behind and support the Cougars as they transition to the outdoor season.
