The Gary Community School Corporation is the only school district in Northwest Indiana with a radio station recognized by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Located inside of the Gary Area Career, WGVE 88.7 FM continues to be the “real world” teaching grounds for broadcast students and a community platform for news, education, events and resources. The station recently underwent a series of equipment upgrades improving its frequency, reach and sound quality.
Station manager Jeffrey Smith expressed his excitement over the station’s expanded capabilities.
“Over the past couple of years, WGVE 88.7 FM has embraced its role as one of the premiere information outlets for the northwestern part of the state,” said Smith. “With that in mind, we have committed to upgrades and reliability that keep us competitively operating at the industry standard for media entities, both terrestrial and online.”
Some of the upgrades included the installation of the latest firewall technology and surge protection to ensure the safety of equipment and technology. Features have also been put in place to provide better radio and live streaming access as well as a better listening experience.
The aforementioned improvements also represent greater opportunities and career preparation for students enrolled in the Broadcasting program at the Gary Area Career Center.
“Our scholars are learning to operate this equipment and will be familiar with the most current software should they seek to enter the broadcast industry after high school or select a major in this field while in college,” added Smith.
The station features a diverse line-up of programming including Smith as the morning show host and other on-air personalities who play music, interview guests and share information daily. Career Center students also produce news casts, public service announcements and special programming.
“WGVE is definitely a jewel within our school district,” said GCSC superintendent Dr. Yvonne Stokes. “Students are gaining experience that will not improve their communications skills, but prepare them for careers in radio and television.”
