September is registration month for Girl Scout troops in the Valparaiso and Washington Twp. areas. Daisy Girl Scout troops accept girls in Kindergarten and 1st grade; 2nd and 3rd grade girls can join Brownie troops; Junior Girl Scouts are grades 4 and 5. For the older girls, troops are forming for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Cadettes as well as Senior Girl Scout troops for 9th and 10th graders. Ambassador Girl Scouts are girls in 11th and 12th grade.
Girl Scouts USA is the largest volunteer organization for girls and women in the world. Started by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia with just 12 girls, Girl Scouting today has millions of members in big cities and small towns all over the world.
