Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb sat down with GreatNews.Life Founder Chris Mahlmann for a legacy interview reflecting on his eight years of service as governor. With his term concluding in January, Holcomb shared heartfelt memories, celebrated milestones, and expressed optimism for Indiana’s future.
“A Hoosier is a hardworking, humble, and dedicated community member who gives back and loves their neighbor,” Holcomb said.
He fondly recalled moments of Hoosier solidarity, particularly during disaster relief efforts in northern Indiana.
“At the crack of dawn, people drove hours to help strangers—because they were Hoosiers, and that’s all that mattered," Holcomb said.
Reflecting on his time in office, Holcomb highlighted transformative projects that have reshaped the northern Indiana region.
“We’ve achieved all we set out to in this region,” he said, citing the double-tracking of the South Shore Line and the West Lake Corridor project, along with massive investments by technology companies.
These initiatives, he said, have strengthened the region’s economic opportunities by enhancing connectivity to Chicago and the lakefront corridor.
Holcomb also noted the collaborative spirit driving the state forward.
“Communities here are working together like never before, helping the rest of the state see the incredible opportunity this region holds—right in the middle of commerce, technology, and innovation,” he said.
Gratitude was a recurring theme in the governor’s reflections.
“My wife and my team have grounded me, and the guidance of my parents and teachers built me into the person who could serve Hoosiers for these eight years,” he said.
Holcomb shared his excitement about Indiana’s place on the national stage, pointing to the upcoming Notre Dame vs. Indiana University college football playoff game in South Bend.
“Two Indiana teams on primetime TV—it’s another first-time-ever event that puts Indiana in the spotlight,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation for GreatNews.Life and its mission.
“Thank you and the whole team for taking the high road. GreatNews.Life has always been a beacon of positivity—please keep that up,” he said.
Holcomb added that he plans to stay connected with the organization and its efforts to share uplifting stories as he transitions to private life.
Mahlmann is also thankful for Holcomb's time, help, and support furthering the GreatNews.Life mission throughout Indiana during his time as governor.
"Governor Eric Holcomb has consistently exemplified the hardworking Hoosier spirit, connecting with our crew while visiting Camp Life, out at major events, and embracing all digital platforms to share Indiana’s successes," Mahlmann said. "His genuine dedication to celebrating the state’s achievements and the impact that has had on Northern Indiana set a high standard for collaborative leadership, inspiring others to embody the values of unity, hard work, and Hoosier spirit that define Indiana."
As he prepares to leave office, Holcomb emphasized his optimism for Indiana’s future.
“We’ve laid a strong foundation, and the opportunities ahead are immense. I hope my leadership has inspired others to make a difference in their communities,” he said. “We can and we will continue to do big things."
While his time as governor is drawing to a close, Holcomb’s legacy of collaboration, resilience, and hope will leave a lasting imprint on the state he has so faithfully served.
