Friday, February 16

Boys Basketball Crown Point Bulldogs vs. Lake Central Indians 

Crown Point High School hosted its senior night as the Crown Point Boys Basketball, Dance, and Cheer squads were all honored with their parents before warmups. The Crown Point dance squad performed during halftime. Lake Central was victorious 32-30. 

Top scorers were Dikembe Shaw (Crown Point) with 12 points and Jake Smith (Lake Central) with 13 points.

Boys Basketball Valparaiso Vikings vs. Chesterton Trojans 

The rivalry between the Valparaiso Vikings and Chesterton Trojans was alive and well. 

Chesterton hosted Valparaiso for a Duneland Athletic Conference match. It was a close match all night long. Chesterton came within a few baskets in the end but it ultimately was not enough. The Vikings won with a score of 63-57. 

Jack Smiley of the Vikings was Valpo’s top scorer with 17 points. 

Tyler Parrish of Chesterton had a total of 33 points.

Duneland Athletic Conference Gymnastics Meet

Valparaiso High School hosted fellow Duneland Athletic Conferences schools for a gymnastics meeting on Saturday, February 17. Valparaiso, Chesterton, Portage, Lake Central, La Porte, Merrillville, Crown Point, and Michigan City competed.

Semi-State Girls Basketball

Girls Basketball Valparaiso Vikings vs. Noblesville Millers 

The Valparaiso Vikings took on the Noblesville Millers. The Millers pulled ahead in the first quarter, and the Vikings were never able to recover. The Vikings lost with a score of 59-42.

Girls Basketball Lake Central vs. Homestead Spartans 

The Lake Central Indians took on the Homestead Spartans in the first game in the Semi State matchups. The game was close from start to finish. LC pulled out the win with a final score of 55-42. Vanessa Wimberly put up 18 points to help her team secure the win. The Indians moved on to play the Noblesville Millers for the Semi-State title.

Girls Basketball Semi-State Finals 

The Lake Central Indians Girls Basketball team were victorious in the Semi-State Championship game against Noblesville with a final score of 52-36. 

The Indians will play Lawrence Central for the 4A State Championship at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday, February 24.

Lake Central will be going to state for the first time since 1998.

Region Sports Update

Exciting stuff is happening around the Region, here’s a rundown: 

Congratulations to the Valparaiso Vikings Boys Swimming team for winning their first Sectional Championship since 1998! 

Congratulations to TJ Caldwell of the Hobart High School Football team on signing with Valparaiso University to continue his academic and athletic career!

Congratulations to Cole Jenkins of the Andrean High School Football team for committing to Marian University Indianapolis to continue his academic and athletic career! 

Congratulations to Dontae Pope of the Merrillville High School Football team for committing to the University of Saint Francis to continue his academic and athletic career!

The boys basketball rankings in the Duneland Athletic Conference came down to the wire as four teams hold a 5-2 conference record. 

Those four teams are Lake Central, Crown Point, Valparaiso, and Merrillville.

Tuesday, February 20

Wheeler vs. Washington Township Boys Basketball

The 4-16 Wheeler Bearcats host the 9-9 Washington Township Senators. The Senators average 57 points per game and are currently 5-5 in away games. They look to climb the rankings and get above a .500 record on the season.

Saturday, February 24

The IHSAA Girls Gymnastics Sectionals take place at Crown Point High School at 12 p.m CT.
