GreatNews.Life Student Voices: Hobart is experiencing some summer fun!

What’s recently happened?

On June 2, the Hobart High School (HHS) class of 2024 celebrated their graduation, marking the finale of years of hard work and dedication. The ceremony was filled with joy and excitement as students, teachers, and families gathered to commemorate this important milestone.

The event featured inspiring speeches from several distinguished students, including Student Body President Jackson Ray, Class President Gamileo Cruz, and Valedictorian Trent Brown. Each speaker highlighted the class’s numerous achievements and shared valuable insights and encouragement as their peers prepared to embark on new adventures.

“Coming to support as a sophomore was so rewarding. I gained so much respect and knowledge from such an outstanding class,” said Alexis Rachau.

A memorable moment during the ceremony was when senior class sponsor, Cathy Nelson, drew attention to a chair draped with a cap and gown in the back row. This chair was dedicated to Amelia Olson, a beloved classmate who passed away in 2017 while attending Hobart Middle School. She was remembered fondly as a friend to many. This time was taken to remember and celebrate Olson.

Following the ceremony, the field was full of celebration as friends and family members eagerly took photos and congratulated the graduates. It was a day filled with emotion, pride, and a sense of accomplishment for all involved.

“I would have never wished for a more perfect send-off,” said 2024 graduate, Addy Black.

What’s coming up?

This summer, Hobart’s Lakefront Festivals promise to be a highlight of the week for residents and visitors alike. Held every Thursday, these festivals bring a mix of activities and entertainment to Hobart’s beautiful lakeside. Attendees can look forward to an array of food trucks offering delicious, savory treats. Additionally, the festivals will feature small business vendors showcasing unique products, handcrafted goods, and local services, providing a fantastic opportunity to support local entrepreneurs.

Live music will be a central feature of the Lakefront Festivals, with different bands and musicians performing each week. From rock, jazz, blues, or pop, there will be something to add to the festive atmosphere. As the evening comes to a close, family and friends gather to enjoy an outdoor movie under the stars, a perfect way to end a fun-filled day by the lake.

The City of Hobart’s 4th of July celebration is set to be a spectacular event, bringing the community together to celebrate Independence Day in grand style. The festivities will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. organized by the Hobart Chamber of Commerce. This year’s parade features the high-energy performances of the Hobart High School marching band and cheerleaders. Local businesses will join, showcasing their community spirit alongside the impressive display of fire trucks and police cars.

The parade will start at Hobart Middle School, proceeding north down Main Street, and concluding at Washington Street. After the parade, the celebrations will shift to Festival Park, where the entertainment kicks off at 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy a variety of activities and refreshments as they await the evening’s main event. From 6 to 9 p.m., live music will be provided by Aftermath, a band known for their energetic performances.

As the sun sets a fireworks display begins. At dusk, the night sky will be illuminated by an array of fireworks, expertly displayed by Johnny Rockets. This show will provide a fitting end to a day of celebration and community spirit, leaving attendees with memories to cherish until next year’s festivities.

Community spotlight:

Michele Fraze is the librarian at the Early Learning Center (ELC), Hobart’s kindergarten school.

Fraze’s role at the ELC goes beyond that of a traditional librarian. She has started integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) into the curriculum, providing students with a unique and engaging learning experience. Fraze’s innovative approach includes the establishment of STEM Fridays, where students participate in hands-on activities that foster creativity and critical thinking. These sessions are made possible through grants that Fraze pursues to ensure that the materials and resources are available for the students.

“One of my favorite aspects of this class is that it gives children an opportunity to explore more hands-on experiences,” said Fraze.

Fraze talks about the importance of interactive learning experiences in early education. She believes that creating a love for STEM from a young age can pave the way for future academic and professional success. Fraze’s classroom is a hub of activity where students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and discover. This dynamic approach not only makes learning fun but also helps children develop a deeper understanding of STEM concepts.

Outside of her role at the ELC, Fraze is also actively involved in volunteer work. She dedicates her time to Camp Invention, a program designed to inspire creativity and innovation in children. Through her volunteer efforts, Fraze ensures that children have access to opportunities that ignite their curiosity and imagination.

“During the summer it can be difficult for families to find time for learning activities. This camp allows children to interact and form connections with each other and their ideas,” said Fraze.

When she’s not working or volunteering, Fraze enjoys spending quality time with her three children. They often take advantage of the summer weather by driving around in their jeep, soaking up the sun, and exploring new places. Additionally, her family has a shared love for desserts and enjoys trying out sweet treats from different stores around town.

“With such a packed schedule, I cherish every moment of free time. Summer is a great time for me and my three kids to spend time with one another,” said Fraze.

Fraze plans to continue contributing to Hobart’s educational landscape. Her dedication to student’s learning will make a lasting impact on the ELC.
