Hobart High School was full of activity on Tuesday night as the Coaches – vs- Cancer basketball event got underway. There were so many activities going on you were sure to find something to do to help support the cause.
Event Coordinator Diane Glidewell said, “This is our third year having this event and it has grown each year. It is a fun event that is run nationwide through High Schools and Colleges to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.” She added that “we are very grateful to all those who have helped and especially to those who have made generous donations that to help make the event so successful.”
Shirts were sold through the Athletic Department as well as event organizers and at the door. Selling for only $10, all profits benefit the Cancer Society. The shirt gave you an added bonus as it was also worth a free entry into the basketball game against Valparaiso.
There were tickets available for a 50/50 raffle that was going on throughout the evening. The 50/50 has raised anywhere from $50 to $200 for the ACS. The 50/50 was over a hundred dollars when checking in at half time.
Tables were filled with awesome gift baskets that local businesses donated to the cause. Buying a ticket allowed participants to place all tickets in one basket or divvy them up between their choices. Contributing baskets to date were: Kara’s Hair Studio, Cutloose Hair Salon, Hobart Lanes, Agave, Railcats, Area Sheet Metal, Subway, Mexican Fiesta, Old Thyme Magick, Cracker Barrel, and many parents, friends and personally donated baskets from a number of generous donators. Tickets were going fast with everyone having a hard time choosing which baskets they wanted to take their chances on. As the evening went on, the tickets in the collection bags were getting bigger and bigger.
For $1 you could show your support by placing your name on a card that was placed on a poster showing your support on the “Wall of Hope.”
Sweet Arrangements provided the baked goods and sweets for the Bake Sale. All the items were donated by owner Yolanda Sanchez.
“I got involved after my granddaughter came home and told me about the event," Sanchez said. "I talked with Dian (the event coordinator) and came out with an assortment of baked goods. All the proceeds from the all sales are contributed to the American Cancer Society. It’s even dearer to our hearts now as we have a family member who is battling cancer.”
There were cookies, cupcakes, and all sorts of delicious looking treats to buy with all the proceeds going directly to the ACA.
Between the JV and Varsity games they did the Honor Tribute. You were able to submit a photo of a loved one what was battling cancer, had conquered cancer, or succumbed to any type of cancer. The gym was silent as the photos of those affected by cancer flashed across the screen.
During the Varsity halftime, participants enjoyed the pie in the face. There was quite the line for those who were going to participate in the pie in the face contest. For $1, participants could fling a whipped cream pie in the face of a willing target. Volunteering for targets were : Brett Munden, Lauren Swafford, Jim Rappold and Audrey Weaver. They had no idea what was in store for them! Asking volunteer Jim Rappold how he got involved and he said, “Well they asked me and I couldn’t say no!”
There was whipped cream flying everywhere with all targets getting pummeled by pies.
And yes, there was a basketball game going on. The Brickies hosted the Vikings from Valpo. The bad weather wasn’t keeping anyone home!
Gildewell said, “The first year the goal was to hit $1,500.00 and we made $2,000.00. We beat our goals of $2,000 by raising $2,400. This year we are hoping to raise $2,000.00 due to the weather we have been having.”
