A typical day for this position might include creating ads that run on our sites for various clients, doing various HTML/CSS tasks that help with the maintenance of our site, creating graphics at various sizes (for Facebook, for Instagram, for print, etc) for an event or party that might be coming up, following up on the approval of recently submitted designs, building the email newsletters for the weekly and mid-week mailing, updating frequently used print materials with more recent information, and occasionally redesigning outdated print/web materials to make them more effective. Some of the more web-oriented maintenance tasks, for example, might be auditing ads and profiles to make sure everything is published to the correct sites and reviewing profiles for broken links or outdated information.
This position requires attention to detail, the ability to balance multiple projects at once, and the flexibility to switch between high priority items and wear many hats as needed. Must have a willingness to learn new things and experiment with design.
This position:
- Is entry-level
- Is full-time or nearly full-time (30+ hours)
- Involves working in many different areas, including:
- Designing graphics for web and print
- Working with local and online print services
- Occasionally writing copy for various purposes
- Some contact with clients outside of the office through email, phone, etc.
- Some design projects include ads, posters, media kits, flyers, infographics, and promotional graphics for social media and articles.
- Using HTML/CSS to create business profiles for our partner businesses
- Using HTML/CSS to fix small issues with articles posted on the websites
At times this position involves updating content and addressing emergencies during evenings and weekends.
Required Technical Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of Photoshop and strong skills in Illustrator and other Adobe programs
- Strong skills with HTML/CSS for building online profiles and newsletters
- Familiarity working with Windows and troubleshooting problems
Other Requirements:
- You will be functioning as your own art director. The design and direction of projects are at the discretion of the designer with input and approval from whoever requested the design.
- There is a lot of flexibility for creativity, though there is some structure in place as far as colors, logos, and themes.
- Must be able to work quickly and think outside the box for solutions on occasion.
- Many of the designs feature a lot of text, so the ability to work well with typography is a must.
- Must be willing to take ownership of projects and make sure they reach completion in a timely fashion as well as follow up on anything that needs to be approved, posted, printed, emailed, etc.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Clear and timely communication is key.
- Ability to switch projects as needed if priorities change and work to meet deadlines.
- An eagerness to take on a variety of tasks as needed and wear many hats in helping to manage and grow our sites
Encouraged (But Not Required):
- Knowledge of After Effects and video editing a definite plus
- Photography skills/general camera knowledge a plus
