Tuesday night, we asked Portage residents on our PortageLife Facebook page what nonprofit in the area they would give to if they suddenly had a thousand dollars to donate as they wished. Portage residents were definitely in a giving mood Tuesday evening, because the response from our audience was enthusiastic. The comments piled on quickly with users’ suggestions for charitable organizations, topping out at nearly 50 comments by Friday morning and thousands of views on the post.
When threads like this get a lot of attention, we like to shine a light on them and really emphasize the giving spirit that makes our community so great. Plus, it allows us to give a little attention to those working to uplift those in communities around Northwest Indiana.
Youth and Kids
“Boys & Girls Club. So helpful to Job-Parents; A safe, decent place, for children of ALL ages, to go after School,” said Gail M. Travis.
“Portage high school MCJROTC. They help out with A lot of civics in and out of town and do an awesome job,” Cassie Coleman-Sutton said, selecting the Marine Corps Junior ROTC, which gives young recruits projects to improve the community.
“Hannah's Hope…they do wonderful things!” exclaimed Pat McLeod. Hannah’s Hope just broke ground on an accessible and high-tech playground near Founders Square in Portage and helps provide developmental equipment to kids with special needs. This was among the most suggested charities in the thread.
“All worthy causes, but I would say the Distinguished Young Woman Scholarship Program of Portage High School. They try to give out approximately $9,000 every year to participating students through Interviews, Scholastics, Self-Expression, Talent and Fitness segments...This program gives out scholarships to assist high school senior girls to further their higher learning goals and is always in need of funding,” commented Troy Williams on why he felt this program was especially deserving.
“Backpack meal program. Too many kids are going hungry,” said Trish Krauskopf

“Shop with a Cop. They helped me out dearly one year when the market had crashed and my husband was laid off. Such a great organization,” suggested Dawn Jarzembowski Laskowski of the organization that seeks to foster positive relationships between police and the community.
“Portage Tri Kappa. We support many organizations in Portage Township and the state. We raise funds for charity, culture and education. We have been involved in the Portage Community for 50 years.
"We give to Gabriel's Horn, Portage Food Pantry, YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, Outstanding Young Man, Distinguished Young Woman, naming a just a few,” said Sally Vanderlin Wilkins, citing the many groups Tri Kappa support.
“Founders Fund...free, yes I said FREE concerts all summer long!” Joe Zirconia said enthusiastically.
“Portage YMCA!” said Meagen Spencer, echoing many other commenters.
“Portage Community Historical Society (Indiana),” said Kathleen Heckman of the area historical society that preserves and educates on Portage history.
“Portage Exchange Club for all of the great things it does for our kids, seniors and Veterans!” added Brad Clapp.
“Food pantry to help feed the Portage residents,” said Angela Davis, wanting to see more funding go to feeding those in need in the community.
Hopefully, all of these groups and more can feel the outpouring of love and support the Valparaiso community has for them! Though hypothetical, perhaps this will inspire giving from a few more people and provide a cornucopia of potential recipients for those looking for the right nonprofit to give to. Way to go, Portage!
