Indiana Beverage celebrates the return of happy hour to Indiana

Indiana has lifted its long-standing ban on happy hours, allowing bars and restaurants to offer drink specials once again.

Supporting local businesses throughout the Region, Indiana Beverage On-Premise Manager Michael Imus sees this recent return as a great opportunity for local businesses.

“Starting July 1, this is the first time happy hour has been legal in Indiana since 1985, and it's been a long time coming,” said Imus.

House Bill 1086, or The Happy Hour Bill, allows Indiana bars and restaurants to offer discounted drink specials for no more than four hours a day, excluding the hours of 9 p.m to 3 a.m.

“We really believe that this was done as a way to help drive business back into the bars,” said Imus.

Hit hard by the pandemic, Indiana bars and restaurants are always looking for ways to encourage patrons to return. For Imus, this also means a return to people getting together.

“Today, you can get almost anything delivered,” said Imus. “Going out for the big game or meeting a colleague after work isn’t as mainstream as it once was.”

Not only does the Happy Hour Bill provide a way for businesses to thrive, it also lets guests experience local beer, wine, and food at a discounted price.

“With this new law, we've got this opportunity to provide really good specials – both food and drink – to our customers,” said Imus.

The Happy Hour Bill also encourages bar and restaurant goers to venture to their local spot during less crowded hours.

“A lot of businesses are excited to welcome people for an hour or two during happy hour and then hopefully gain a new customer,” Imus said.

In addition to providing on-site discounted specials, the Happy Hour Bill also allows bars and restaurants to sell carryout items. To qualify, carryout items must be less than four quarts and must be sealed

The Happy Hour Bill also restricts each establishment to offering happy hour for less than 15 hours and prohibits bottomless specials.

Indiana Beverage looks forward to supporting its partners with this new and exciting change.

“Ultimately, this bill is a move to help support businesses, and it’s a good reminder to remember the importance of just going out and socializing with people,” said Imus.

With the return of happy hour, Region residents can experience Indiana's bar and restaurant specials throughout the week.
