Korellis Adds New Position to Safety Department

Korellis has welcomed a new addition, and added a new role, to the organization. Derek Crews  joins the team as Project Safety Manager.

Crews spent over 20 years’ active duty with the United States Coast Guard, spending the last  six years years as Command of stations in Michigan City and Milwaukee. “My career in the  military helped me bring a lot of training and experience that translates directly into my new  role,” said Crews. “It provided valuable skills such as leadership, team management, instructing,  and attention to detail.”

The appointment of Crews marks the first time Korellis has had two full-time managers in the  Safety Department. Joel R. Barnes, Korellis’ Safety & Risk Manager, has been with the  organization for over four years.

“I am thrilled to have a dedicated Project Safety Manager on our team. This strategic decision  underscores our unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of safety excellence,” said  Barnes.

The comprehensive safety program at Korellis includes regulations in place that meet or exceed  roofing industry standards. An ongoing approach to safety training includes weekly toolbox talks,  mandatory monthly company-wide safety meetings, and an annual day committed to safety,  “Safety Fest.” Korellis is one of only 49 companies in the state of Indiana to have an INSHARP  certification and is in pursuit of OSHA VPP. Maintaining the highest level of safety standards in  the industry, with jobsite conditions that ensure a safe working environment for the employees,  clients, and general public, is a critical part of the company’s strategic plan.

Barnes’ voiced what he believes will be the biggest impact of the new position. “We anticipate a  safer and healthier work environment for our employees, improved compliance with industry  regulations, and ultimately a stronger foundation for the success of our many long-term  projects.”

Crews will concentrate on jobsite safety inspections, site specific safety plans, and client  compliance requirements. Crews noted, “I have always been dedicated to team safety, and I  wanted a job that would challenge me. Recognizing the dynamic nature of the construction  industry, I am eager to gain knowledge and experience in this field.”
