Scrapbooks are making a comeback! Creating scrapbooks has become an art form lately. However, the art of scrapbooking goes back many generations. If you have ever spent a rainy afternoon blowing the dust off a family photo album, then you know the joy of connecting with the past.
The La Porte County Historical Society Museum’s newest display focuses on those memories. A portion of the vast collection of scrapbooks owned by the society has been brought out for viewing for the next 3 months. The scrapbooks will be on exhibit until the end of May. Some date back to the late 1800’s, some are much more recent. Different clubs and organizations kept track of their histories by pasting photos and clippings into a book. There are numerous books showing the histories of sports’ teams, hospitals, school memories, Military Honor Rolls and the list goes on.
As most of these books are extremely fragile, White Glove Stations have been set up around the display area. Put on the gloves and feel free to look through these valuable “bits” of La Porte County History. We have tried to show a good representation of types of scrapbooks, and have placed them in categories in the exhibit area.
The museum is located at 2405 Indiana Ave. (Hwy 35) at the south entrance to La Porte. Hours are 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday. For admission prices and other information contact 219.324.6767 or www.laportecountyhistory.org. The building is accessible to those with disabilities.
