The City of Lake Station celebrated Region veterans with its two-day Hoosier Vet Fest, a fun, family-friendly weekend that brings the city together. The event was inspired by the city’s desire to give back to those who gave so much for its freedom.
“Just seeing the community come together and have such a great turnout is nice to see, and everyone having something to do on such a nice day is amazing,” said fest-goer Pam Shaffner.
Festivities began on Friday with a veteran-led raising of the flag followed by live music from the Steel Country band, Rusted Strings Band, and Small Town while Little Miss Make Believe entertained children with special activities. Attendees could also shop at local food trucks and craft vendors for food and gifts uniquely Lake Station.
Saturday’s fun kicked off bright and early with a motorcycle run for veterans and a free barbecue. The vendors returned for everyone’s shopping needs, and Enchanted Tales NWI brought heroes and princesses for photo opportunities with the kids attending.
“My favorite thing is the lemonade, The only place you can get it in the fairs, and it’s perfect to have it within walking distance from me,” said attendee Lillian Ondo.
The whole city turned up for the Hoosier Vet Fest. Between the live music, local shopping, and veteran activities, it was apparent how important getting to come together was to the community of Lake Station. Seeing the positive effect the festival had on attendees makes the effort that goes into putting an event like this on.
“My uncle passed away serving this country, and I’m glad that our community is showing love to our vets and giving them the celebration they deserve,” said fest-goer Cindy Jorgensen.
The Hoosier Vet Fest wouldn’t have been possible without the support of sponsors like NIPSCO, Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, and Indiana Beverage, among others.
Sponsors help support the many fun activities that occurred throughout the two-day festival.
The fun continued into Saturday evening with performances from the Joe Humphrey Band and Together. As the festival came to a close, a team of veterans lowered the flag with dignity and ceremony as attendees respectfully watched on, mirroring the event’s beginning on Friday.
“This gives adults and kids something to do during summer that’s safe, fun and a good time for anyone,” said attendee Richard Perez.
