Land of the Free, Because of the Brave

America's Veterans have served their country with the belief that democracy and freedom are ideals to be upheld around the world. --John Doolittle

st-paulEvery year for Veterans’ Day, St. Paul Catholic School has a short program honoring and remembering the sacrifices of those who have served our country in the Armed Forces. Previously, we have had a simple program performed over the PA system by some of the middle school students, including the playing of taps, the reading of poems, the singing of songs, and a moment of silence for all those who have served to keep our nation free.

This year we are honoring our veterans more publicly, by having a program in the church after our regular all-school Friday Mass. We have asked parents and grandparents of some of our middle school students, along with our own Father Michael, a veteran who served in Korea and Mr. Rickman, a veteran who served in Vietnam, to come and be honored for their service. Sometimes, in our hectic everyday world, it is easy to forget that we have heroes in our midst. Please consider coming to our ceremony on Friday as a way of thanking our school representatives of the Armed Forces. If you are unable to come, we encourage you to offer a special prayer of thanksgiving for all our veterans.

As Dwight Eisenhower said, "...it is well for us to pause, to acknowledge our debt to those who paid so large a share of freedom's price. As we stand here in grateful remembrance of the veterans' contributions we renew our conviction of individual responsibility to live in ways that support the eternal truths upon which our Nation is founded, and from which flows all its strength and all its greatness."
