Artwork decorated the sidewalks surrounding the Valparaiso courthouse on the morning of Saturday, June 11. It was the morning of the Annual Chalk the Walk, an event sponsored by the Family & Youth Services Bureau.
Jackie Gray, Director of Development and Community Relations for the Family and Youth Services Bureau, said, “We have two objectives that we are trying to accomplish today. We want to raise money for the agency but we also want to provide a family-friendly event for the kids and their families in our community.”
The mission of the Family & Youth Services Bureau is to assist youth and families through supportive services that create a positive change for Porter County. Established in 1972, the Family & Youth Services Bureau has served thousands of Porter County children and their families. Their services include programs to build parenting skills, deal with issues of substance abuse within the family, and discover appropriate methods for family communication.
The event truly brought Valparaiso together through the arts. Children were able to get their faces painted by members of the Valparaiso High School Key Club and caricature drawing was available for purchase by local artists.
Jodie Hammonds, a 4-year Chalk the Walk participant, stated, “I’ve lived in Valpo all my life, and this event is especially unique because it’s amazing to see how many people dabble in art. There are people here with all different artistic backgrounds. It doesn’t matter if this is the first time or your hundredth time using chalk; everyone has the ability to create something.”
Participants came ready to roll, laying out several artistic tools and carrying large boxes of chalk to create their masterpieces. Individuals and businesses were able to purchase an area to chalk in and display their creativity. Companies who did so included Realty Executives, Farrall Wealth Management, and Horizon Bank.
Amber Tan, Valparaiso High School student, said, “One of the aspects that I really like about this event is that is represents Valparaiso throughout generations. There’s everyone from elementary school students to families here. I love the way the community is able to come together through the arts to make a positive difference in a wonderful organization.”
Once again, the Family & Youth Services Bureau had a successful Chalk the Walk. Be sure to visit Downtown Valparaiso to check out the dynamic artwork on display.
