Local Students Will Spell Their Way For A Chance to Attend The Scripps National Spelling Bee

One spelling bee winner, sponsored by Kankakee Valley REMC, will walk away with a lifetime trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The LaPorte County Regional Spelling Bee will occur on Thursday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m. at Tri-Township School (309 School Drive, Wanatah).

Twenty-one school winners from LaPorte County participating schools will be in attendance at the Bee. These students qualified for the LaPorte County Regional Spelling Bee when they won their school spelling bee competition. The students in attendance will be vying for the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in late May.  First-, second-, and third-place finishers will receive a trophy and cash prize from Kankakee Valley REMC.

The LaPorte County Regional Spelling Bee is part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by the E.W. Scripps Company and local spelling bee sponsors. Kankakee Valley REMC is in its fourteenth year as a local sponsor for this Bee.

“To make it to this level of competition is a huge accomplishment for each student. Participating in a spelling bee is a valuable way for each student to demonstrate and be recognized for their academic excellence. We are very proud of each of them and their dedication,” stated Amanda Steeb, communications/marketing director for Kankakee Valley REMC.

Kankakee Valley REMC is an electric utility cooperative serving over 18,000 customers throughout LaPorte, Porter, Lake, Starke, St. Joseph, Pulaski, and Marshall counties.
