Marquette Rugby Football Club Holds Teams Scoreless at State Jamboree

mchs-rugbyMarquette Rugby Football Club demonstrates they are no longer a “rookie” team having left the Rugby Indiana Jamboree, held at the Indianapolis Colts Pavilion this past weekend, holding all opponents to scoreless periods. The Blazers displayed a confident and controlling defense against several veteran clubs.

The Blazers came out against Westfield ending in a 0-0 battle after 15 minutes of play. Their second contest proved a winner as the Blazers’ Nick Smith, scored the first try of the season. The result was a 5-0 victory over Pike. In their third match, the Blazers once again ended in a 0-0 scoreless tie versus Bloomington.

Coach White stated, “The Rugby Indiana organization did an excellent job in arranging the event for all high school boys and girls rugby clubs in Indiana. The day was well scheduled and proved to be a tremendous warm up for our players.” Brian Allen, second year co-coach of the Blazers commented, “The early season experience allowed us to evaluate our current strengths and weaknesses. Overall the boys played their hearts out and left it all on the field.”

The Blazers, noted as the killer bees due to their navy and gold harlequin uniform jerseys, are set to open their official season at the Marquette Athletic Complex located at 8600 West Pahs Road on Saturday, March 16 against Carroll at 11:00 AM CST. The team currently has 21 players on its roster from 5 local high schools.

Interested male high school athletes are still eligible to participate on the squad and should contact Coach White at jwhite@marquette-hs.org for more detailed information. Practices are generally 3 days per week. Most matches are played on Saturday mornings.
