Merrillville thespians take home top honors

Merrillville, Ind. Members of the Merrillville High School Thespian Troupe #1692 were recognized at the State Thespian Competition in Franklin, Ind., last weekend. 

For the seventh year in a row, Merrillville will represent the State of Indiana with two students, junior Myia Dickerson and sophomore Lauren Molenda, who were elected as State Thespian Officers! 

Merrillville High School has had 10 STOs in seven years. To become an STO, the students went through a rigorous interview and application process. STOs represent students across the state and help plan competitions and leadership conferences.

Additionally, junior Myia Dickerson auditioned for and was accepted to nine different colleges.

MHS Thespian Troupe was recognized as a Gold Ranked Honor Troupe for all of the participation, community service and outreach that they do.

Lastly, many MHS students were recognized in their individual event competitions. Students who ranked superior included: Zhanvie' Edmond, scenic design; Jarius Taylor Newman, solo musical theatre;  and Ja'Leah Walker, solo musical theatre. 

Students who ranked excellent included: Kaitlin Bowens and Amia Giddens, monologue; Sade' Daniel and Kaitlin Bowens, and Hunter Frangis and Danai Nixon, duet Acting; and Aaliyah Perry, Amia Giddens, Miracle Davenport and Jarius Newman  for group acting
